Dow 1947, bottled by Mitchell & Son of Dublin. Half bottle. Opened and double decanted at 08.30. Chilled in the fridge before serving. Mature bronze with a red tone to it. Spiced butter on the nose, almost smelling like fresh popcorn! As the wine warms a little it develops more spiced apple. Smooth on the palate, the spiced apple shows up first but then there is a wave of acidity which carries a little heat at first.
Going back to the nose, some additional time in the glass has allowed the nose to open to reveal a wonderful cinnamon and clove spiced apple.
The cinnamon spiced apple shows strongly on the palate, smooth flavours with a lovely freshness. The aftertaste is gentle and nuanced, it doesn’t have the power or length of the Rebello Valente 1970 finish but is still a wonderful lingering spice. A beautiful wine. 96/100. Drunk 18-Aug-2024.
