NV 20 YO Henriques and Henriques Terrantez

Each time I come to Madeira I go to the Pingo Doce supermarket in town and buy a bottle of this excellent and highly characteristic wine as pre dinner drinking. 75 euros which is probably as cheap as it is anywhere. Anyway a glass of this vibrant mahogany liquid while sitting watching the sunset is a treat. Properly dried-thyme herbaceous and high acid which cuts the slightly crème brûlée note nicely.

€75 is an excellent price for a great wine.

And also a most wonderful place to be drinking it.
Where are you staying?

@ MigSu - it is!
@ Alex - Quinta Penha Franca in Funchal. Single beds, ‘local’ food - Madeira has cooking rather than cuisine, but sometimes what you want really is a tuna steak the size of your head for 15 euros - seawater pools, truly fabulous laundry, excellent location, and a barman who knows how to make a poncha properly. I’ve been here almost every January since about 1994. Used to come with my old man, who would have been 89 next Tuesday.

Oh, nice. I've stayed there once. It's really quite nice, and not at all expensive!
