Quotes with Port

I'm planning a small port party soon (gotta open one of those SWC 77's already :) ) and was looking for puns or sayings with port in them. This brought me to bartlett's, whereupon I took to investigating quotes with port wine in them...

Some fun ones:
Claret is the liquor for boys, port for men; but he who aspires to be a hero must drink brandy. - Samuel Johnson

We had some port, and drank damnation to the play and eternal remorse to the author. - James Boswell

Departed Goose! I neither know nor care. But this I know, that we pronounced thee fine, Seasoned with sage and onions, and port wine. - Robert Southey

The men who think of superannuation at sixty-one are those whose lives have been idle, not they who have really buckled themselves to work. It is my opinion that nothing seasons the mind for endurance like hard work. Port wine should perhaps be added. - Anthony Trollope

Some odd ones:

Silver and ermine and red faces full of port wine. - Church Times

‘Tis here with boundless pow’r I reign; And ev’ry health which I begin Converts dull port to bright champagne; Such Freedom crowns it, at an inn. - William Shenstone (Boo!!!)

When we think back to our forefathers, with their sedentary lives of forest-chopping, railroad-building, fortune-founding, their fox-hunting and Indian taming, their prancing about in the mazurka and the polka, with their coattails flying and their bustles bouncing, to say nothing of their all-day sessions with the port and straight bourbon,... we must realize that we are a nation, not of neurasthenics, but of sissies and slow-motion sports. - Robert Benchley

Who's got more good ones? (other than the bishop ;) !)

How does one obtain an invitation to such a “port party†?

“A woman in every port, and some port in every woman† — jdaw1, circa 1991. Happily, it seems that in academic society both the women and the men like this ideal.
The author of the Anthem of the Cambridge University Tiddlywinks Club wrote:The ’winks club’s mats are soaked in port,
And so are all who play the sport.
Tomato juice and such-like drinks,
Aren’t good enough for tiddlywinks.
And when our team’s just won the cup,
It takes us weeks to sober up.
As long as they serve real ale here,
We'll keep the winks club drinking beer.
(Also quoted here.)

Just like that :) This one may be a little tricky timing-wise as I want to have it during a damp summer day ("Port in a storm" party) in June, so participants were asked to keep an eye on weather.com. The plan is to open the SWC77 and a youngster (churchill 95?) or LBV. I'm right on Metro North, btw.

O plump head-waiter at The Cock,
To which I most resort,
How goes the time ? 'Tis 5 o'clock.
Go fetch a pint of port!

Alfred Tennyson

What the English like to do is to face reality with a glass of port and a tear and fade off like Basil Rathbone into the sunset.
Pete Townshend

It is easy enough to be moral after a good dinner beside a snug coal fire, and with our hearts well warmed with fine old port.
Henry Mayhew

I must have one at eleven
It's a duty that must be done.
If I don't have one at eleven
I must have eleven at one.
(Rich, Rare and Red, p.68)

Any time not spent drinking port is a waste of time
(Percy Croft)

The first duty of Portwine is to be red

The second quote can be ignored on the grounds that it is Cockburn and he has not yet apoligised for Special reserve.

But is the existence of the 2 quotes and your hatred of SR ironic or coincidental?

Coincidence - even special reserve is basically a red drink.
