I just want to make an important point to anyone who may have stumbled across our Site.

We are here to try to make the drinking of Port fun! How much you care to know about what you've drunk or how it came to be...IS UP TO YOU!!!

It can be quite off putting, when you are enjoying a nice Ruby from the Supermarket, while some twerp is writing two pages of Tasting Notes on a 1927 Fonseca. On our Forum you are allowed to glaze over at some of our brethren explaining their new Label designs, their re-corking plans, or their newly designed Airport friendly Port carrying Luggage!

It's your site too, so we all want you to ask questions and tell us what you thought of that Ruby!

The big point is, we're all inclusive, and if anyone smells a whiff of Port Snobbery, they will be rounded on and dealt with. (Usually by some serious mickey taking, other times by straight forward abuse!)

So please, dont be put off by some folks intensity, their knowledge or their clear insanity. They started off like you, and they all want you to stick around and brighten up their days with your thoughts and questions.

I sometimes think we get the balance a little wrong, and the Geeks take over the asylum. But I can vouch for them all being remarkably nice people, helpful and considerate. (Utter Pillocks when drunk as well! )

So I wanted to make this Post to explain that the Geeks wont bite. And if it makes one of you, who was wondering whether to bother to Post, actually decides to do it, It was definitely worthwhile.

Join in and have fun. So how was that Ruby? And how much was it?

Couldn't agree more.

As a relative newcomer, I can vouch for the sentiment. I was surprised at how much debate occurred over a bottle of Tesco own label Port I enjoyed last weekend.

...and just spotted my user level is "Cheap Ruby" as I post this!

I think this is a valid point we all have financial commitments some more than others but whatever vintage port is an expensive hobby other ports less so.I would like to think whatever port we drink on this forum either novice or expert will be given the same attention on the forum and I think it has.

Agreed. My wallet simply doesn't allow me to buy the 'big' vintages. As a matter of fact I'm only capable of buying one or two bottles of descent VP a month, while my taste buds ask for two bottles a week.
That is the main reason why I drink more LBV than VP, because over here they're about a third the price of a VP.

I sometimes enviously read the posts about people buying cases of VP.



So to any newbie: not all of us are drinking Nacional every day.

I am so very much a Port novice! I just like to drink Port for the flavour and the pure enjoyment!

But I am looking forward to learn about the good stuff!

Don't worry about being a Port novice. When I found this place a year ago, I hardly knew the difference between a Ruby and a Tawny.
I'm still learning every day. Don't be afraid to ask the wiseguys anything.

That should always be the sole reason for drinking Port.
