What colour is tawny?

Tawny port covers a range of pleasures and sins (not mutually exclusive). Nonetheless, for the purposes of designing the style for

a non-
VP secondary colour is needed, a secondary colour that ought to go by the name “tawny†. Currently I am using
••• #CC9933 ••• as tawny. But DRT insists on calling this manifestly tawny colour “mustard†, even though mustard is yellower† .
So, please, using your best skill and judgement make your recommendation for the official TPF tawny, choosing from the colours at
www.jdawiseman.com/papers/trivia/web-colours-hsl.html (on which page each colour appears once) or at
www.jdawiseman.com/papers/trivia/web-colours-rgb.html (thrice).
If the third umpire is required, please choose whichever will be more legible against a pale background, that is, the darker or darkest.
† Of course, screens vary. It might be mustard on his screen. But we’re not admitting that without an argument.

••• #CC9933 ••• is Dijon Mustard - admittedly not Coleman's English as previously claimed by me.
••• #663300 ••• or
••• #993300 ••• look more like tawny to me.

I agree with Derek that
••• #CC9933 ••• is Dijon Mustard.
However, I think that his two picks for tawny are too dark... Then again, I'm typically drinking 20-yr old Tawnies or Colheitas in the 30- to 40-yr old range, so that might affect my perception of "tawny" as a color.
After much experimentation (since the colors look different here than they do on your "web safe colors" page), the best I can do is
••• #CC3300 ••• which isn't that far off of Derek's second.
Do we have to use multiples of 3, or would something like
••• #EE5522 ••• work?

Yes, I’m arbitrarily and wilfully restricting the main colours to the multiples of 3 (screens differ by more, so it is enough granularity). Pick:
- ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #FF6633 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #FF6600 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #FF3333 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #FF3300 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC6633 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC6600 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC3333 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC3300 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
Derek, Glenn E.: I could live with
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC3300 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ (which looks different against a grey background than it does against the pale old-tawny). Could you? (The pale version of this would be
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #F5D6CC ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ.)

Choices shown against the other background:
- ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #FF6633 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #FF6600 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #FF3333 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #FF3300 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC6633 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC6600 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC3333 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC3300 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ
Derek, Glenn E.: I could live with
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC3300 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ (which looks different against a grey background than it does against the pale old-tawny). Could you? (The pale version of this would be
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #F5D6CC ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ.)

That just looks orange on my screen and the pale version is almost invisible.
I am happy for others to choose.

Pale version to be used as a background, so should be only slightly different from white.

As I'm now looking at these on my work computer, which is a laptop, they look completely different. Again. On this computer (or more correctly, on this monitor) they appear much more orange than they do at home.
Either CC3300 or CC3333 looks good on this computer. If my memory serves me well, which it rarely does these days, there was something not quote right with CC3333 on my home computer.
The pale version does look very pink. Is the pale version an automatic conversion, or could it be selected manually as well?

Pale: there are alternating backgrounds for posts and PM reply sequences. I’ve chosen a faint grey, and an equally faint tawny. But these can be anything. However, whatever things they are should be harmonious with the rest of the colours.
But my faint version is computed, as follows. Start with colour r:g:b, 0┰¤r┰¤255, 0┰¤g┰¤255, 0┰¤b┰¤255, and with a target total brightness, measured as the sum of the three colour components. Then choose n such that the colour 255â€‟nà (255â€‟r):255â€‟nà (255â€‟g):255â€‟nà (255â€‟b) has as near as possible the required total brightness, and that’s the faint version, provided that the new r:g:b values are â”°Â¥0 and ┰¤255.
But this computed faint colour could be over-ruled by hand, if so desired. (Though why bother: screens differ. At least that particular choice would have clear reasoning.)
Anyway I want it yellower than do you or Derek. So if you two can find something that works on all four of your screens, I won’t argue.

Oh I don't really care, I was just providing feedback as requested!
The current "tan" works well to me as a "light" color alternating with grey.

Right. Having heard what’s been said, and considered the arguments, and following our increasingly-traditional one-man-one-vote democratic habit† , the new tawny is
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC6600 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ, and the new pale tawny is
┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #f4ddc6 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ. And I am unanimous about that. To show it against the opposite background, they are quoted here.

You should stand in the next Dunny-on-the-Wold by-election
Derek
PS: If I poured a glass of tawny port that was the same colour as TPFtawny I would write a TN which started
"Strange mucky orange colour - the same colour as the water you would find in a rusty old iron pipe."

Looking at it in daylight, on my wife’s computer, I also hate the new tawny. Too orange.

Yeah, it looks okay (but not great) on my home computer, but really looks orange on my work computer.
I think *** CC3300 *** is probably better. It still has a hint of orange to it (unlike *** CC3333 *** which to me is entirely red) but still retains some red as well.

On the wife’s computer ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ #CC3300 ┓ˆâ”“ˆâ”“ˆ looks too blood orange to me. I want it yellower.

Sure, I'll buy that for $1.
It looks pretty orange to me (or in this case burnt orange), but I recognize the need for it to be distinct from TPF red.

I would also provide feedback, but my head hurts too much...
Isn't pale f4dd66 the colour of Croft Pink Port?
