Old & Odd, New York, Friday 7th November 2008

I can't find the original thread for this tasting, but there was a tasting arranged in New York in May (if I recall correctly) that was postponed at my request so that I could attend.
I will be in New York on the 15 and 16th of October. Is anyone interested in resurrecting this planned offline?

I’m in.
O&
O became the LBV tasting — which is why you can’t find it.
First question: Wednesday 15th October or Thursday 16th October 2008?
PM invitation sent to ajrh, differentdave, EricD, g-man, hwangs, jfacciol, SEAN C., SushiNorth, Andy V, bob and AHB himself.

Considering i will have just gotten home from my trip overseas 3 days earlier and Alex's L.A. offline on the 21st., I will no doubt be broke and not able to fly across country again for another offline, as much as I want to. So unless something changes, I most likely won't be able to make this.

Count me in, think think I may need to adopt or source though. I will keep my eye out for something very old and or odd though.

I own four suitable bottles — adopt from me.
Jay wants Thu 16 Oct, and g-man probably shouldn’t come on either date. That suggests Thursday 16 October 2008.

I can make Thursday 16th, but do not yet know where I will need to be on Friday 17th or whether that day will be the day I am deposed by plaintiff's counsel.
Bearing in mind I may need to have my wits about me on the Friday, I would very much prefer to have the tasting on Friday evening, if that fits with the social plans of others.
I have a bottle of "Refreshed 1896" port shipped under the name of Garcia. I know nothing about this bottle but would welcome an excuse to open it in the company of others who would find it interesting. This was the bottle that I was hinting of bringing to keep Jay's Schofield from being lonely.

Fridays are generally better for me, I can 1)drink more 2) stay out later and 3)not have to go into work the following the day.

Friday sounds good to me. But there has been such a huge outbreak on this forum of sensible statements about when to drink port that I am not sure this is really theportforum.

We have a date. Title edited to “
Old & Odd, New York, Friday 17th October 2008†.
Jay: this thread has mentioned that Friday evening is a good time to drink port. That view is fully consistent with official

policy. Other good times to drink port, also consistent with official

policy, include Monday lunch, Monday afternoon, Monday evening, Tuesday lunch, …, Friday afternoon, Saturday lunch, …, and Sunday evening. This would not be the real ThePortForum if any of these self-evidently excellent times were widely denied.

That sounds like we just drink too much, how about any day that ends in a "y"

I called up Henry's End and they're willing to host us late on friday for roughly 8 (as in 6 or 10 range) people.
They said if we come in at 9pm we'd get the restaurant for the rest of the night.

Corkage is 25$/bottle
and the wild game festival starts in 2 weeks.

Jeff, do I understand correctly that we could not start until 9 pm? That's too late for me, although the restaurant looks quite tempting.

We’ll have a bottle or so of port each. That needs most of five hours.

Unfortunately i don't own the restaurant so I couldn't say =)
But the guy that picked up the phone did strongly hint at "later" in the night for fridays that I took to mean 9 =) ... I'm sure we can get away with 8:15-8:30

I need to start at about 6 pm. I have a memorial service that I am attending in Westchester the next day and cannot burn any midnight oil.
My vote, therefore, would be to keep looking for another venue.

I'm a bit hacked off, but it seems that I will need to move my US visit back by a couple of weeks. It now looks like I will be in LA on November 2-4 and in New York on November 5-7.
While this will give T-Bird another shot at attending, do these dates work for other folks in New York?

I'm going to make every effort to attend once we have settled on a date. My wife wants to go to New York to see Spamalot again, so we're going to make it a weekend and have some fun.
I don't believe I have anything that qualifies as "old" or "odd" though, so I may have to adopt. Is there a formal definition of "odd" so that I can check? (My cellar almost certainly doesn't qualify for "old" as the oldest bottle I have is a 375 of the 1957 Kopke Colheita.)

Is this date now firm? Friday, November 7th?
If so, my wife and I are going to purchase tickets to New York so that I can attend on Friday night and we can go to a show on Saturday night.
Where is this being held? I have access to an apartment in Manhattan - will that be good enough or should I try to get a hotel closer to the event location?

Friday 7th is definite - or at least as definite as I can ever make anything when I have to travel subject to the demands of work.
My preference would be for the tasting to be mid-town or downtown to allow me to stay conveniently in either the Millennium Hilton or the New York Hilton at 52nd and Sixth.

My wife and I have purchased tickets to New York and so I'll be able to attend on Friday, November 7th!
We arrive in Newark at about 3:00 which should allow plenty of time to get to the apartment we will be using in Manhattan and then on to the tasting, wherever that ends up being.

Correction on number for me - my wife is not a Port drinker, so I'll be the only one attending the tasting. She is coming with me to New York so that she can drag me to Spamalot on Saturday night.

The steak is good, as are their sides =) ...
but I agree, if there's corkage, I wouldn't want to get hit with 300$ (assuming 30$ / bottle standard)
Otherwise, I'm happy to have a trek to brooklyn too.
glenn, are you going to spamalot after the tasting? or is it a separate day?

Hahaha... no, we're going to Spamalot on Saturday night. However, I will still be performing a feat of sorts - flying for 7 hours and getting pre-dehydrated before going to a Port tasting! I'm think I'm going to need extra water for this one...
And just to make it official, I will be adopting one of JDAW's bottles that he has so kindly offered up. Being a fan of WWII games & such, and having never tasted a Hoopers, I will lay claim to the 1942 Hoopers. Though the 1947 Barros was also tempting!

Alrighty. Here's the deal. The general manager, Jennifer, says she would either cut the corkage in half, so it's 12.50$ a bottle or if we order something(s) of equal value (of the corkage) on the WINE menu, she would wave the corkage for us.
I have a tentative reservation for 10 at 7:30pm.
Let me know what you guys want to do. I'll tally up the votes.
Edited for clairification.
