1994 Sandeman vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Decanted about 4 hours, and served by the glass by a pub in rural Sussex. Deep ruby red with colour holding into the rim. No purple, no browning. On the nose a smell of overwhelming blackcurrants, hints of herbiness, wood ashes and alcohol. Harsh, acidic and unbalanced entry. Bitter impact. Midpalate develops fruity tones with buttery flavours. Lots of acid, little obvious tannins. Still bitter and slightly harsh. Bitterness dominates the length, which slowly fades into a bitter chocolate taste. Drying and slightly unpleasant even if it is a long finish. Overall, I would say that this is clearly not a wine to drink now but might improve. Open again in 3-5 years time. 82/100. Tasted on 21/3/06.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
