With very little knowledge of how the In Bond system actually works in the UK I have always assume that buying VP IB/UB of whatever age is relatively safe as the case/bottle will have been stored under controlled conditions since being shipped from VNG.

Am I deluding myself?

I also have very little knowledge of the system, but my assumption is somewhat less than yours. Namely, I do not assume that the case was originally shipped from VNdG. I believe that all the IB system means is that it has been held since it was shipped to the UK. That could have come from anywhere, and may have been recent.

I'd love to know more about it, though.

I think the assumption that bonded warehouses are perfect storage locations is unwise.

At the risk of being unfair to the parties concerned I would make the following observations:

EHD - Weybridge - insulated warehouse, but no obvious temperature management, and doors normally open in all weathers.

Octavian - Kemble - uses a nuclear-proof aircraft hanger - should be good except massive doors are normally wide open.

Octavian - Corsham - the deep cellars should provide near perfect conditions.

London City Bond - Tilbury - warehouse on decrepit site - no insulation or temperature control visible at the loading bay.

Wine Society - Stevenage - conditions appear to be good, although I have not been inside their warehouse.

My conclusion at this point is that it was a good decision to ask the question
