Well not just unusual places, and I don't mean California. Seeing pictures of Derek and Andy stuck up a Munro made me wonder where people may have been daft enough to try Port, then under what circumstances and accompanying what food. there is no point in asking what time of day because most of us have had Port for breakfast.

We can also go for the highest altitude whilst not in a plane and what the hell did it do to the Port?

I have had Port in Crested Butte, Colorado, which is at right around 9000 feet. I didn't notice any changes, but I wasn't looking for them.

Mt. Crested Butte, which is the town surrounding the base of the ski lifts, is at 9800 feet.

The High Lift near the top of the mountain runs up to 12,000 feet. From there, you must hike up to the top of the peak at 12,500 if you want to ski the glacier. (Which I did not. Think about that for a minute. Hike up a mountain through the snow in snowboarding gear, carrying a snowboard, in windy weather at roughly 0 degrees, to 12,500 feet. I can barely walk in the snow at 12,500 feet, let alone climb a mountain.)

Somewhere part way down the mountain is a bar - including an ice bar outside - that also served Port, but I made the egregious error of not ordering a glass while we were there. I will correct this error next winter if we make another trip there for Christmas.

I shall try such feat in the tropical jungles around Thailand during the honey moon!

Like Glenn, I have had Port in CO too, (but it was either Sandeman's Founder's Reserve or Graham's Six Grapes) in 1988, in a bota bag which I usually carried while skiing. I lived in Colorado at the time and was skiing with my wife in Aspen. We were up on the "Big Burn" at Snowmass with an enormous vantage point at the top (11,000 ft.) where trees had been burned away a century earlier, and faced with some fantastically challenging double blacks coming back down the side of the mountain. We enjoyed the view and this was our favorite outdoor sipping spot, besides our home hiking park (Rocky Mountain National Park) where we spent most weekends with our Lab.

But thinking back to Oct. 2008, possibly my most unique spot sipping Port was with Stuart and Andy, after a full night of fun at Vinologia. We had a bottle of 1992 (?) Quevedo Colheita and 3 glasses. We went underneath the main bridge separating Porto and Gaia at about 1 a.m. and hung out on an outcropping right down at river level with a bunch of night time fisherman. We hung out slowly sipping that bottle and talking Port and other fun topics, chatting with the young fisherman to the best of our ability and enjoying a beautiful early autumn night into morning. Perfection.

So you were drinking under a bridge?

LOL...yes we were as a matter of fact It was also one of my favorite times, which is strange to say drinking under a bridge in Oporto is. But I gotta call it like I see them and we were there till 4am

No - I don't 'do' honeymoons - they tend to have expensive consequences..

I am currently in the town of Hua Hin in southern Thailand, and have a bottle of Sandeman '60 in the fridge (also the remains of the Croft 1904..)

Havn't decided when (or where..) they will be consumed yet..

I didn't realize thailand had such good ports,

we're currently in bangkok heading over to koi samui in a few days.

The best port i've seen is the Taylor's special tawny .. (the california one, not the port one) and it sells for 13$ US a glass. =(

On the piste at Argentiere / Grand Montet. Altitude about 3000metres. It was Dow Trademark.

Today I pushed our mark a little higher - I shared a Kopke 30-yr Old Tawny with Eric Menchen at the top of the lifts at Beaver Creek, which is 11,440 feet.

It was delicious, and didn't appear to have been affected by the altitude. It might have been affected by our state of physical exhaustion, however, because I at least was fairly beat by the time we tried the samples I'd brought with me.
