Late December 09' or Beginning of '10 NYC: Dow Vertical
Posted: 15:14 Fri 24 Apr 2009
by g-man
In Julian's absence, Sushi and I are trying to plan a dow vertical tasting as inspired by our fellow tasters across the pond.
Dow's represented in the NY stash are:
1960, 1963, 1966?, 1970, 1977, 1983, 1985, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003
Location: TBD
Post interest and or available contributions here.
Thank you!

Since this is in the early planning stages, I'll express interest. Actual availability will depend on exactly when in late December this ends up being held, as too close to Christmas will likely preclude my participation.
I have '77, '80, '85, and '94 vintages and the '64 Dow's Reserve (Colheita). (We drank my last '70 at the Port Gala this year.)

I’m delighted that NY

has enough momentum to keep going without me.
I’m much less delighted to be missing a Dow vertical. Ho hum.

Ah, so I guess Dow was the decided house, and the cat is out of the bag
Dow 1970 - check. Now I feel silly making it one of the unannounced acquisitions on the "recent purchases" thread.
Let's see, to be specific I have 70, 77, 97, 2000, 2003 to make available, with the 70 specifically purchased for this tasting. (i've only one 94 and I'm holding onto it til it grows up). I've also a bomfim 95, if we care.
Dow put out a VP in...
60, (62?), 63, 66, 70, 72, 75, 77, 79, 80, 83, 85, 86, 91, 94, 95, 97, 2000, 2003 and... 2007

I think they put out even more SQVPs.
Even if we go for pre-90's wines, we're at 12 wines if were completist. If, instead, we want only GOOD years of Dow, well, that's a different story!

the 79 is a bonfim i believe ..
I believe we can get a fair tasting of
50 (I'm looking for this one), 55, 60, 63, 66, 70, 75, 77, 80, 83, 85, 86(?? you sure?) and maybe a 07 for kicks?
that would make 12 bottles not including the 86 and would go back nearly 50 years of dow.

The 86 may be bonfim too, there's a lot of confusion on these lists.
63 and 66 are wildly expensive for what they are, d60 is "only" 150 on hdh, and we'll likely need those 3 which makes me a little nervous to go back into the 50's.
I'd like to plan for 12-14 people for this tasting, which should make a satisfying glass for all but little for top-ups. We have no date set, perhaps there's some international interest? Anyone on this side of the pond in December?

My understanding is that, since the start of the war, Dow has declared 1943, 1944, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2007.
Twenty-eight bottles would be a smaller tasting than the
1970 Horizontal held on Friday 30th January 2009 at the RAF Club in London, but probably would still be sufficient.

12-14 is perfect for a large tasting.
"perhaps there's some international interest?"
Are you kidding?!! There's huge international interest and real angst that I can't make it. It's very unlikely that I will be flying to the US anytime soon and almost certainly not in December.

Late December is a little tough as work tends to be really busy that time of year. I won't know if I could possibly make this until later in the year, but will let you know if I can.

We're doing end of 09' beginning of '10 ... so ample time for coordination

Don't forget that Roy's 2nd Annual Port Gala in Seattle will likely be held near the end of January, and it would be good to avoid a conflict with that.

Dow has declared 1943, 1944, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2007
That includes quite a few years that I only know as Bomfim SQ's, and excludes a few years that I know Bomfim was made. Some early Bomfims had corks and capsules that did not carry the word 'Bomfim'.
I'm only aware of one year when both the blend and Bomfim were made - 1977; and the Bomfim then was a very limited bottling.
My vintage list of full Dow blends over the same period runs:
1945/47/50/55/60/63/66/70/72/75/77/80/83/85/91/94/97/00/03/07

Thank you I’m not disagreeing. Do you have a source for this list?

I'm always interested in tastings, but was just waiting for a date as that is to far off for me to plan.

We're trying to get it sorted, if you could throw out ranges though, it would be most helpful and we'll start to finalize as we get closer.
ie. Xmas time is the worst,
or the new year always holds great promise.

I'm still interested, and it looks like my 1980 will fit in very nicely!
I'll be travelling to visit my folks around Christmas, so to be safe I'd have to block out December 21st through January 2nd. (I deliberately left Fri-Sun Dec 18-20 "free" since I could arrange any travel to include a jaunt to NYC over that weekend.)
Roy will probably be holding the 2nd Annual Port Gala near the end of January, this time hopefully not overlapping Super Bowl weekend. As far as I know, no dates have yet been discussed for PG2.

).

I would rather cut it off at 1985 and go older or have some Dow Colheitas to make up the filler for everyone to have enough to drink.

That's certainly a possible alternative. I would suggest we perhaps go as far as 94 (15 years old and rated 97 by WS.), and we could add in a bom fim or a colheita or two. It may get expensive to find the 50 & 55, but we do have an offer for a 58 and an offer for a 72, we just need to get to england

We should also go looking for the 80, 83 (82?) --
winesearcher has some suggestions.
btw -- does that mean you're confirming?

Let me know and I'll add you to the list.

I have a 1980, or there's one available at La Cave in Dallas for $129.
I'll check, but as I recall this is my family's Christmas (we alternate with my wife's family) so I'll probably be in Crested Butte, Colorado on the 27th.

Can we start thinking about locations Sushi?
Shall I call up one of the restaurants and ask about private rooms and perhaps set up a prefix?

Due to some special-guest-inviting, we've been postponing the planning on this. I'm going to declare it officially postponed, with no new date yet chosen. we'll need to sit down and plan something more concrete for it, soon.
