I realised today that while we have a thread for latest purchase, we have never started a thread for "What are you drinking now?" - until now.

So what's in your glass tonight? Mine currently has in some Dow 1958, from a bottle which was ullaged down to about 50cl but tastes like a pretty decent colheita and is good enough to keep me going through the evening.

True enough. Perhaps it was because I was drinking something for which I wasn't going to post a note that I thought of this thread. (I thought it would be unfair to post a note on what was clearly a poorly conditioned bottle.)

I don't normally do notes on everything I drink, so a thread like this works great for me.

Now, of course, I just have to pick something to open tonight.

I've just finished a cup of tea - it was excellent. Ty-phoo tea, a classic blend with a high Assam content. Steeped with boiling water for three minutes and a splash of skimmed milk. Drunk from a Denby mug it was full flavoured with a strong malty taste and a healthy tannin structure.

Highly recommended 96/100 or 9/0 on Uncle Tom's scale.

I eventually decided to open another bottle of 1994 Delaforce Colheita, bottled in 2002. The first bottle I opened smelled of VA and was quite cloudy, but this one is much better. A very nice bottle for $17.

Perhaps you drank this too young. From the tannic structure and malty taste I would expect this to be much better in 10 years time and possibly with the ingredients to continue to improve perhaps even for 20 years. One to drink on your 60th birthday, I suggest.

I've just had a skinful of beer on an empty stomach. I am now going to cook for myself. I must remember to NOT, under any circumstances, sit down or put myself in any other position whereby I might fall asleep - before turning off the stove..

As for drinking, well, I picked up a couple of house clearance lots for peanuts at an auction yesterday. There's an 'also ran' bottle of '57 claret in there - it's probably rubbish, but there's only one way to find out - and hey! - I've got a Morgan '87 LBV - now there's a rarity - might save that for another day..

Tonight I am drinking Stella Artois 4% sitting beside a log fire on my patio

I opened a bottle of Ferreira 1963 last night; again an ullaged bottle. This one was a little below low shoulder. Because of the poor condition of the bottle, I won't post a note on it in the TN section.

Surprising how often ullaged leaky bottles turn out to be in great form though - that SW47 that went down so well last xmas had a low shoulder level and turned out to be a physically cracked bottle!

My Ferreria '63 is quite pleasant and I'm certainly enjoying drinking it, but I don't want to post a tasting note as my bottle may not be representative of the overall enjoyment the wine can offer. However, if people generally want me to post these notes with a caveat that the bottle was badly ullaged, then I will do so.

I wish... no, as it turns out it was a pre-emptive wake. I just finished the first glass and was called by my boss so that he could tell me I was being laid off.

Guess that's going to cut into my Port purchasing for a while. At least I have a decent cellar to keep me going in the mean time, though!

It was a surprise in that I wasn't expecting it to happen today, but it wasn't a surprise in the sense that I could see that my group need reorganization. Given the larger structure of the company, the way that we were doing things just wasn't going to survive forever. It was known to be something of an experiment by the company, and sometimes experiments fail.

So it sucks and it wasn't expected, but it also wasn't entirely unexpected.

Sorry to hear the news guys, there's a lot of it about at the moment. Maybe I'm a hopeless optimist, but I do see our business picking up slightly in some areas in the UK so things may be starting to bottom out. I hope so.

Sorry to hear about the Credit Crunch biting at a few of you.

I found 2 dozen bottles of Dows Renown at £5 a bottle. So of course it became my house Port. Marvelous with Spag Boll, or creamy steaks. Also the end of night tipple when I'm swaying gently, and the good stuff will be wasted. And for all those buggers who visit and hover around for the relics!

I've not heard of Dow's Renown before.

Is it a normal ruby blend? Reserve ruby?

I'm sitting watching a documentary on BBC4, having decided that sleep is for wimps, and sipping away on the last glass or two of the Sandeman 1967 that I opened earlier in the week.

If anything, it is even better now than it was before.

Seriously, don't diss the 1967 vintage, but try one. They are delicious. I've tried at least 5 shippers offerings and I have yet to be disappointed.

So who else is drinking what?

I've got a Martinez '67 on death row at the moment, but first will come SW80, RP85, G77 & D66.

Right now I'm on my 'non VP' interlude, and have gone far wide of the mark by tackling an ancient bottle of Verdelho, complete with straw capsule..!

Horrid on the nose, better on the palate, but a bit like drinking marmalade..

Not really my scene, Madeira..

Temperatures are a bit down here at the moment. So a kind of heating would be appreaciated.
It's 2000 Quinta do Noval LBV, the filtered version. Some nice and warm cherry fruit, pleasant mouthfeel, but not the sightest wow factor. Even at the relatively decent price of 12€ I won't buy this again. Significant weaker in quality than the unfiltered version. It gets me warm though.

I got Debbie involved in watching the Open Golf and we were so rooting for the 59 year old Tom Watson (On my instructions ).
Outstanding Sporting achievement to be so close to winning.
But there you go, and I felt really flat. I suggested opening a mid range bottle to cheer us up, and Debbie, who has had this one before, was very much up for it.

We'll only start drinking it in an hour and a half, but already, the impressive bouquet has cheered me up.

I do love the Quarles Harris 1977. When I lived in Belgium, the supermarket down the road from me used to stock an impressive range of claret and port and for a while the QH77 was their standard offer and I drank my way through quite a few of them. This would have been around 13 years ago, so 1996 when the port was 25 years old.

And I remember that at the time I was paying about £8 a bottle - roughly the same as a bottle of third growth claret. How I wish I had known then, what I now know about port prices!

Graham's 1985 from a half bottle - the fourth of a batch of six purchase about a year ago.

All four have been very consistent and more evolved than my previous encouters with G85. Is this proof of the fact that halves evolve faster than whole bottles? Or perhaps my batch hasn't been well stored? Who knows! - It's still gorgeous port.

It being a Friday night, I decided that I needed something cheery to compensate for the fact that the builders completely trashed the house today. Fortunately, this is the last time they will make this much mess. I now have all the windows, doors and cavity wall insulation a reasonable man can want.

I also have more dust, debris and plaster splatter-marks than a reasonable man can want and have at least 2 days of cleaning ahead of me.

So I opened a bottle of Warre 1958 and am feeling much cheered.

Just finished the QH77.Had half a bottle left. Lovely. Fruity, still a tad fiery, but in a nice way.

You just cant hide the fruity, yet aged taste, of a pleasant VP. All of varying degree's, but none of the chemical harshness, or plasticity of the LBV's, or worse.

I've got Ninja training for the next two days, but tonight, Conky will sleep with the rosy glow of VP cheeks! It really is a shame that my lifestyle and budget restricts my VP drinking to about once a month, and special occasions.

I've got a final bottle of 1995 LBV which I plan to open soon. I enjoyed so far every bootle of this stuff.

Morgan 1991 tonight - my first one of 2010

Will be opening a 1995 Smith Woodhouse LBV tonight. Very nice juice, and a good price for a bottle-aged LBV.

1985 Quinta do Infantado

Very strong reactions from the group. Either loved it or hated it. Drier finish with medium-light body. Plenty of flavor that reminded me of strawberry Twizzlers. Quite enjoyed this not very talked about port.

Will have to wait until the next bottle- what I posted is all I can remember in retrospect. The Cohiba Siglo II's did not help my notes either. A buddy has few of these and this was the first one we tried. The pop and pour was exciting as we had about two hours decanting before the bottle was gone.

Elys hated this port so much, she went for white wine after the first sip...

An Oporto bottled Rebello Valente 1963, popped open at 6:30 and about half left now. Much better than I was expecting.
