A 60cl sample bottle wrapped in tissue fits neatly inside a Riedel Vinum port glass. Two sample bottles filled with VP, two tissues and two Riedel Vinum port glasses in their original box is all a man needs for a night away from home with the minimum of luggage*.

*I am working on a plan to fit a shirt, tie, underpants, socks, toothbrush and deoderant into a second Riedel Vinum port glass original box for the optimum travel solution.

That's an impressive feat! It normally takes me at least 8 pours to drain a standard 75cl bottle, how do you manage to fit most of one in a single Riedel Port glass?

Topic spilt into
Systeme Internationale Definitions due to mild deviation from topic, caused by trying to fit a quart of Port into a half pint pot - Admin

Oh, that’s me.
Small bottles to hold tasting samples (a thread in which I had the same cl/ml confusion) leads to
0038-06.

Travelling port fiends will also need:
- a collapsible funnel (green Amazon.com, yellow Amazon.co.uk);
- a collapsible decanter (1L Amazon.com, 1L with jacket Amazon.com, 2L Amazon.co.uk) which is best used as a temporary container before redecanting back into the source bottle; and
- a cork from a young bottle of wine (so the cork is robust enough to withstand re-use).

A 1L collapsible decanter has been purchased and will be tested.

I have one of these for use as a water container (with drinking hose) when skiing. I recommend regular and careful cleaning and drying. They can quickly become mouldy with just water. When port is introduced I would suggest you experiment with some more appropriate cleaning such as baby steriliser. I would guess you have this available right now!

Or, to keep Derek happy, sterilisation could be carried out with brandy.

As do you Ben. Would you please test? And then test use as a temporary decanter whilst double-decanting?

Breast-milk: maybe this is a bit wimpy of me, but I’m reluctant to use it to clean a decanter. Your mileage might vary.

Since washing it has stood upside down for four days, and it still isn’t quite dry. It’s going in my suitcase nonetheless, but I’m not happy with it.

I use these things for carrying water when lumbering up mountains. It seems to be impossible to keep them clean for long and they soon become stale and taint the water. This is probably linked to the problem JDAW refers to in that they are almost impossible to dry internally. A different solution is required for the team.

Agreed. But as it might be repairable with a port-rinse, one packed for my travels. Better wanted.

Alternatively, try rinsing out with aguardente (or breast milk) and sealing the bottle with the cap. That should keep the bottle sterile yet port-friendly so that a quick rinse and prime and it should be ready for use as a portable decanter.

thanks Julian, for advertising the funnel. I had Mr. Vesuvio being so nice to acquire two for me. Man I am living in the Port diaspora and I have to change this.
