The Greatest Album Ever

Planet Rock radio are running a competition to identify the greatest albums ever released. For fun, I would encourage everyone to take a look and throw in some votes. You could even list here what you have voted for.

I voted for The London Philarmonic's version of Beethoven's Fifth, conducted by Herbert von Karajan; Dennis Brain leading Mozart's Horn Concerto number 3 in E flat major (what a wasted talent); Joan Sutherland's recording of Lakme by Delibes, with the Monte Carlo Opera chorus.

Think any of these will feature in the final 100?

The Who: Tommy
Michael Jackson: Thriller
Guns 'N' Roses: Appetite for Destruction

Though I did debate swapping out GNR for Nirvana: Nevermind. I also considered Boston's debut album, which was probably the greatest debut album ever.

Elvis and Madonna both seem like they should be represented, but to me neither of them had one album that could be selected above all others. I had a similar problem with the Beatles. I sort of assumed that collections like Madonna's The Immaculate Collection and the Beatles' One aren't worthy simply because they are collections.

So many good albums... really tough to just pick 3.

Squeeze - East Side Story
The Jam - Setting Sons
Pulp - Different Class

This was a tough decision and one unlikely to be mirrored at Planet Rock. I could have thrown in any number of albums, with Imflammable Material by Stiff Little Fingers, Another Music in a Different Kitchen by the Buzzcocks and Automatic for the People by REM being very close to making the grade. The six albums above plus several Sparks albums, both Arctic Monkeys and a fair amount of Dodgy constitute those that I have played more than any others in recent years.

Excellent pick. Pearl Jam's "10" as well as Led Zeppelin "IV", The Clash "Sandinista", or Black Sabbath's Debut should be considered too.

the 1977 Berlin philarmonic's of beethoven's ninth by same composer would be my favorite. But his interpretation of the 5th is also equally fantastic.

Pearl Jam's 10 is one that still plays in my player!
