My local grocery has two Ports that I haven't been able to find much about...

1997 Quinta do Tedo SQVP
2003 Quinta da Gaivosa SQVP

Has anyone had either of these? I checked the TN index and didn't see either one of them, so I'm guessing not.

I found a very inexpensive source for what appears to be about a case of the Tedo and one bottle of the Gaivosa. I picked up one bottle of the Tedo to try it, but am wondering if I should just go ahead and get the entire lot of it. How bad can it be for $20/bottle? (Sticker price is $29.99... winesearcher.com says $55.) I'll also probably pick up the Gaivosa the next time I'm in the store, but was hoping someone would have at least heard of it before because it's not quite as inexpensive.

I opened my test bottle of the Tedo, and it's pleasant but not outstanding. It's pretty red for as young as it is, and the heat reminds me of a warm rum drink. The fruits are primarily red and have an after-effect that reminds me of a warm rum-raisin cake. The tannins are just present, not particularly noticeable, so while the fruits feel like they have some aging left to do I'm not sure it has the tannins to keep it going long enough. It seems to have good acidity, though, so maybe it doesn't need the tannins. There's something very slightly vegetal in the finish. I keep getting this weird impression of Douro bake, too, but I thought that was usually a Colheita phenomenon?

I think it's well worth the $20 though, so I'll probably go by tomorrow and get the rest of them along with the Gaivosa. If I haven't consumed them all by the time I next travel to NYC, I'll bring one along. (Which will be no later than the crossword puzzle tournament in February.)

They also have an assortment of Warre's VPs (1991, 1985, 1980, and 1970) but even clearance priced they're not any better than I can do on wine-searcher.com so I don't think I'll bother with those.

They also had a Croft Pink so I picked up one of those, too. We're going to a friend's house for a tapas party next weekend so I'll take it with me and see what that group thinks. (They're mostly not Port drinkers, so probably the intended market for it.)

I have seen Tedo before and thought of it as a lower level brand. What's the verdict?

It was good enough that I went back to the store and cleaned them out, for a total of 10 bottles (including the one opened).

I'd say a high quality LBV will outperform it, but then again a high quality LBV will also cost more than the $21/bottle that I paid for the Tedo. From the first bottle I'd say it will probably peak in just another 5-10 years (due to limited remaining tannins) but that it will hold that peak for quite a while (due to very good acidity). I'll probably try to keep a few of them around long enough to see how it evolves, but due to limited refrigerator space that may not be possible.

There’s a very nice website about Quinta do Tedo and a blog. It seems that the Quinta has been owned since 1992 by a Bulgarian, Vincent Bouchard and his wife, Kay. The 1997 was their first vintage (jdaw1 and DRT are 1997; 1999; 2000; 2003; and 2007 in the Vintage Table?). They’ve also been making a Vina Velha-type premium Port, the Savedra, in 2000; 2003 and 2007.

All of those apart from the 2007s are already in the database, which also records a 1995 Tedo.

Same Bouchard as in Burgundy?
