Tuesday 8th Sep 09, London - 1994 Horizontal

AHB and I are meeting in London next Tuesday to taste some 1994 VPs. Venue has not yet been decided but suggestions so far are The New Cavendish Club (AHB is a member) and Portal Restaurant. TNCC is current favourite.
Anyone interested in joining us?

Yes, but, alas, I have a meeting that evening. I hope you have a fun night; it will be interesting to hear how the 1994s are getting on.

Interested: yes, able to make it: no. Just had the 94s of Graham, Dow and Vesuvio. Outstandingly to drink now.

Darn, posted a reply and lost it. Darned computers.
OK, if I attend, I'd like to know the deal. Going to be fairly difficult to get a 94 in time, I've got 87 on site and 95 in a cellar somewhere. That aside, rather interested in sharing a snifter.

The deal you probably want to adopt.

Thanks for the link. Had read that but the NCC is something a bit different to everyone crashing at yours.
SO I wonder where I can source a 94 at this time of night?

Two thoughts come to mind:
(i) why? Are you the entertainment
(ii) would the ladies attending the hen night like to learn about port at the New Cavendish Club?

You're thinking of the suggestion I made yesterday, aren't you?

As it is your first time we can invoke Regulation 57(a)iv of the

Off-line Code of Practise* - "When attending an vertical tasting for the first time, and there are no more than 4 participants, a participant is permited to bring a bottle from a vintage that is +/- 1 year from the vintage that is the subject of the tasting". Or you can adopt a bottle of 94 from me at what I paid for it.

That should get your spelling obsession boiling nicely! - yes, team, it seems we have found another one who fits right in

1. It is a horizontal. The proposed rule makes no sense: ±1 year from a vintage that is the subject of a vertical!?
2. Is ‟permited” permitted?
3. I’d have used a dagger (‟” ”) rather than an asterisk (‟*”).

Your rules smell awfully like the rules of Mornington Crescent...
Anyway, hotel booked, my new friend Derek has organised the port, the office will be warned that I *may* be a little excitable on Wednesday and this sounds like fun.
See you there...

These aren't headless cats but I have similar ones with proper bottoms. I can bring those but am bringing the meerschaums (only have 2 though) since we are doing civilised.
I also have tankard style ones (again only 2). Old fashioned tankard in miniature with headless cat pipe on the side.
I can bring some or all that interest you.

I had steeled myself for placemats made by DRT, but would be happy if you were to draft them and I can print them.
Location: New Cavendish Club, London
When: Tuesday 8th September
Who: Nick, AHB, DRT all confirmed; BMHR, CMG possible
The wines: Noval '94, Graham '94 plus 3 others yet to be confirmed, possibly plus 2 others if BMHR and CMG participate

I would like to attend, but have a vague entry in my diary to discuss a new Bonfire Night display with some local parish councillors at a village near Newmarket that day. So far, no-one has given me either the time or RVP, but I fear it will be in the evening.

I am bringing Martinez 94, Kopke 94 and Tesco 94 (believed Quarles Harris). One of these should be credited to Nick as he is adopting.

Seven glasses belongs on US Legal. Five or six on A4. Better information might therefore help.
Updated.
Also:
- No decanter labels (adding a page of DLs would reduce the size of the Titles);
- No placenames (or would Nick need them?).

That's kind of you to offer - placenames can be omitted however I reserve the right to call you "Thingy".

I have just struck a deal for a Malvedos 1962.
The deal has conditions attached that mean a small sample will be extracted from that bottle and the GM65 to be sent to a non-participant.
As there appear to be no other 1962's available in the world I will assume this is acceptable unless told otherwise.

Neither BMHR nor CMAG will be attending. However, I will be bringing a third bottle. That makes 6 glasses each please.
No decanter labels and no placenames is entirely acceptable. We expect Nick to remember two names, at least at the start of the evening.

I shall aim to remember two. At least one of them may need to be mine...
I have packed the following glasses:
2 Meerschaums
6 Headless cats with round bottoms
2 Tankards
1 Pair (reading)
No partridges or pear trees.
It is 34 miles to London, I've got a full tank of petrol, half a bag of port glasses, it is dark and I'm wearing my glasses...

Today I travelled from Chesterfield to London with 3 bottles of port, 2 empty half bottles, 6 Reidel port glasses, a decanting funnel, corkscrew and all the things you would need for a three day trip away from home. These are the sacrifices we make for the greater good

Thanks. This tasting seems to have more unknowns that usual. We may be 3, we may be 6, or somewhere inbetween.
...and I have just decanted the first of three bottles and it smells of wet cardboard

I am confused, what more is needed?
Ah wait, I figured it out. Unbleached cheesecloth. You'd also need that.

Yes, I had drunk corked port before.
No, I hadn't seen requirements for cling film before now - otherwise I'd have been worried.
If last night was representative of port tastings then I shall certainly be up for more (subject to not being barred due to unruly behaviour) though I doubt the naked lady would be repeated...
I'm pleased to report that at about 1am, the port had been consumed, a good night had been had, notes had been made and the port taxi took me back to my hotel safely.
Thank you to both Alex and Derek for a great evening.
