Dow’s Q de M Port; Castro Mello

Consecutive lines in The Wine Society’s catalogue from June 1892 mention ‟Dow’s Q de M Port, Vintage 1887 (own bottling)” and the thoroughly abbreviated ‟Do., do., 1889 do.”. (For both cost per dozen = £1.65. Please sir!.)

Presumably ‟Dow’s Q de M” is neither Senhora da Ribeira nor Bomfin, nor Santinho nor Cerdeira. Does anybody know what it was?

Edit: Second question. Starting June 1896 the Wine Society catalogues include ‟Castro Mello, Vintage 1886, Bottled 1892”. A curious LBV, from a house of which I was previously unaware. Is that true of others?

Could it be Malvedos since it wasn't sold to graham's until 1890?

Doubtful, since that would be Quinta dos Malvedos.

I can't think of that many other 'M' Quintas, though. Magalhães doesn't work either, as it's Q. do Magalhães.

I don't have a copy, but I recall that Richard Mayson wrote a history of Dow; so either the book, or RM himself, might be able to fill you in.

Did you find any archive material on the Wine Society's Crusted ports?

Tom

Am watching for you. As I go through the data, I’ll post as appropriate.

The only ‟Quinta de M”s in my list are Quinta de Macedos and Quinta de Marrocos.

Or is the ‟de” a Wine-Society typo in a less precise world (note to self: check whether WS employed a classicist who would have been sensitive to these matters), in which case this could be a pre-Graham Malvedos? Was pre-1890 Dow sweet like modern Graham?

Also, we need a bottle for the forthcoming tasting Graham’s & Quinta dos Malvedos: 22nd March 2010. We need a bottle.

Could it be Quinta de Madalena, now owned by Warre's?

That would be Quinta da Madalena, presumably? (At least according to www.SmithWoodhouse.com.)

Doubtful, since that would be Quinta dos Malvedos.
That is, of course, assuming they got their spelling right.

From what I found, Quinta do Bomfim was bought in 1896 and Senhora da Ribeira in 1890. Silva & Cosens also owned Quinta do Zimbro which they bought in the same period. So this port is from before they actually owned any vineyards of their own... So it could be any quinta starting with an 'M'. Quinta de Monsul? Quinta Dona Matilda? Quinta do Mosteiro?

Maybe the Mayson book can shed some light, but I don't have it.
