I am a member of the Group "Gordon's Wine Bar" on Facebook. I received a message with this quote in it last week. (Only just read it this morning.).

Remember, if you want any of the excellent Fat Bast**d wines which we are now sole agents for in the UK, you can buy it for home delivery for £7.50 a bottle from our Wineshop. There are also quite a few other things available for Gordon's lovers from the Shop - including for the first time a limited number of Gordon's 5 litre barrels which are ideal if you want to safely store our house tawny port for the odd tipple now and again!!

Would this be the perfect gift for the man who has everything living in the port desert that is Paris?! It would be about perfect for entertaining a weekend visitor if I remember correctly.

No - Fat bar steward't all that.

Ermmm... when did they become sole distributers for FB? It used to be available in Sainsbury's for a fiver.

It was the 5 litre barrels for tawny which caught my eye!

Hmm..

I'm wondering if that is the real McCoy, or one the tawnies made in South Africa..

I don't think Gordon's sells any non-Portuguese port. From the way which it's written, I imagine the barrel will be sold empty (or they'll fill it up from bottles).

That was my reading of the offer too - an empty barrel.

I contacted Simon Gordon a couple of months ago about buying the port at off-licence prices; the barrels are actually a little cheat- they're empty (as you say) with a bag of wine inside the barrel!

Out of interest did you (or could you) ask him which shipper they are from?

It also occurs to me that Gordon's might be a fun and not-very-expensive place to have a tasting. They now seem to have a bit of the bar with a table for 10 which can be booked in the evenings (as long as you turn up before 1630)...

I believe his bottled port comes from Messias, so I assume that's where the bagged stuff comes from too.

The cave/cellar bit is perfect on a cold winter's day, some of the wines are good but port is a tad limited in selection. Very good cheese though!

This is very weird. Port in bag from Messias? I'd love to see some pictures of this, so if you organize an off-line in Gordon's Bar please take some photos!

They've now added Messias 1989 vintage port to their wine list. I shall make a trip quite soon I think.
