Port consumption in 2009...

I've just been totalling up what I drank in 2009. Apparently, over the course of the year, I tasted roughly 119 different Ports (), although my domestic consumption remained quite stable at about a half-bottle a week.

The three shippers I drank the most of were Warre, Taylor, and Quinta do Crasto (which provided my ‟domestic” LBV for the year). The top SQVP was Vargellas. The most-drunk year was 2003 (LBVs, again) although the rough mean year of the Port was 1976, something no doubt boosted by the Christmas offline!

Does anyone else keep records of the port that they drink in a year?

Happy new year!

I do keep records like this - and when I have the energy I'll dig them out and add mine to this thread.

119 ports tasted? I got worried there and thought you meant 119 BOTTLES...

No idea of mine - I daren't keep a tally otherwise the AA may have to get involved. I can confirm that the worst one of 2009 was a £5 bottle from Lidl. It may have smelled a bit like port and looked a bit like it, but it tasted syrupy and I wouldn't recommend it even for cooking.

I’m sure there are some members of :tpf: who make it close to that number of bottles

Ah, would that be C. Da Silva’s Armilar Ruby by any chance? A wine which competes with the Cruz Pink as the most infamous Port in existence!

Thinking about it, I don’t think I drunk any particularly bad Port in 2009, even on my white Port binge in Oporto. Unless I’ve forgotten something, the only badly made Port was that first sample of 2007 Crasto (which turned out not to be the final blend at all); the other undrinkables were all corked or otherwise defective...

I would have to do quite a bit of digging to confirm the numbers but I reckon I will have opened at least 100 bottles from my cellar and tasted between 200-300 during 2009. :nirvana:

In 2009, I drank from 338 different bottles of which 85 came from my own cellar and a bunch were 2007 samples.

The most tasted shippers were Warre (31), Noval (27), Fonseca (20), Taylor (20), Graham (16) and Sandeman (16).

The most tasted vintages were 1970 (63), 2007 (51), 1963 (24) and 2003 (21) and the oldest was the Sandeman 1884 tasted at the Christmas Offline.

I find it quite interest that Warre came top for Alex too, and also achieved a balance between both Symington and TFP brands. I suppose it shows how equally balanced things are in the Port market!
