Hi all,

It's been a long time since I wrote on this forum, sorry for that. But at least I have been reading once in a while...

I was looking for a nice Port to drink 'one glass a night' for a week or so and usually I like tawny ports for this purpose. So looking for a nice tawny I found a bottle of Niepoort 10 years old white (ok it won't be a tawny because of it's colour, but it sounds comparable)? I never drink white port and the best white I drunk must have been an ok Port, but never exceptional. I never saw . Heard the story once in Porto that white port started as a replacement for Jerez-wines in the times England was not really friends with Spain... But back to this port, has anybody tasted it? What can I expect? I didn't find a tasting note?

I tasted the Niepoort 10 year old white for the first time a month ago in Porto. I thought it was a very good example of a white tawny. It could perhaps do with a bit more complexity, but for drinking a glass every now and then it should do fine.

I had the 10y old White Tawny of Niepoort twice last year. I do agree with Ronny, it is a fairly fresh Tawny and a good representant of the 10y old league. Quite expensive though. I do like the 20y olds much better.

Opened it yesterday. I fully agree it could have some more complexity. I also agree it is much too expansive (I paid 30€)...

In the wineshop where I bought it, they told me it was not that sweet, but after tasting I can't agree!!! It was really sweet... It tasted like a juice of white chocolate! The good thing is that I like white choclate, but from a Port I expect there is at least some more layers to taste... Let's see how it develops...

@Axel: Is there 20y old white as well?

Oof, that's very expensive!! Didn't know it was priced that high.

Aren't most Niepoort tawnies a bit on the expensive side? A quick look around suggests the 10 year-old goes for about £25-£30 here...

Am I right in thinking that only a 10 year-old white has been approved by the IVDP, so that anything older would be unofficial?

Price seems to be equal to the 10year old tawny. By the way, this 10 year old white doesn't mention the word 'tawny' and of course it doesn't have a tawny colour...

Second day still lots of white chocolate, hardly nothing more than that...

I can't really imagine, because he was more or less advising me this port! I think it has more to do with the 'level' of retailers in the Netherlands Although this one is usually well...

to my knowledge there is only a 10y old White on the Market. From time to time you can find some White Colheitas from Dirk, but they are extremely rare.
