Tasted as part of a Vesuvio Vertical from 1989 to 2008 at The New Cavendish Club, London on 23rd February 2010.
*Please note that the 2008 Cask Sample was donated to this tasting by the Symington family before the final blend was complete so this may not accurately represent what the Vesuvio 2008 will be, should it be approved and declared later in 2010.

A touch lighter than the 2000. Quite muted on the nose and in the palate but elegant to drink now.

Like the 95 following the 94, I found the 2001 a bit weak and uninteresting in every way. A bit of heat on the back-end also kept this from being a particularly enjoyable experience.

Quite dull on the nose - closed? Very approachable on the palate. There is nothing "wrong" with this wine but it just seems to lack a bit of stuffing.

I had this one 4 weeks ago and got completly different impressions.

Drank the half of a standard bottle within 8 hours .
Intitially nose of Cabernet (sic!), later plum, black cherry, spices. Generous sweetness, comlex fruit, full bodied, viscous. If chewed explosion of aromas of red fruits, cherry und dried plums, later licorice and black tea. Ends very long with masses of polished and finegrained tannins. Minutes later you can perceice black cherries in your mouth. I'd say that this will be a great one.
The above comment was split from this thread and moved to here by DRT as this is a TN from a different bottle so deserves its own thread

Deep red, with an opaque centre. Youthful. Little on the nose, but what there is is an attractive mix of mulberry and blackberry. Soft in the mouth, covers the tongue with gentle chocolate and bramble. Plenty of soft tannins to support a delightful structure. The aftertaste is slow to develop but eventually delivers a very pleasant but soft finish. An elegant and pleasing style, but I wonder if this is closing up? 89/100.

V01: opaque, with a red edge. Lots of grapes, but much rougher than the V99 and V00.
