Pretty cool. In Holland there is the Hollandse Waterlinie in which there is a number of wine stores and wine storage facilities. It is a far and distant dream to own one of those facilities one day.

I've been mulling over the design of a second cellar (I'm running out of space.. ) and am warming to the idea of a vertical access...

Carrying cases of wine down flights of stairs is actually quite hazardous, and the cost of building stairs is not insignificant.

A vertical access is cheap and space efficient, and cases can be lowered or raised using a block and tackle attached to a cradle. It is also quite difficult for a thief to extract the content of the cellar, if the lifting kit is not left on site.

Question is - how big do I make it...?

There are certainly big economies of scale, and although this will be my maturation cellar, with relatively infrequent access, it would be nice to be able to extract a case without having to re-stack most of the others..

In England, at least, if you own a piece of land which has no access to it and your neighbors are being awkward about letting you over their land, you should be able to apply for one "by necessity".
