June Offline 21th June- Crusting pipe- 1982 horicontal

Hi there,

when meeting Tom on Saturday we also discussed the possibilty of a 1982 horicontal to find out if there are any good. Hence this thread to find out if there is any interest. :)

The ports from 1982 i have are Ferreira, Delaforce, Croft and Noval. Please let us now which ports from 1982 you have and if you are interested. As an initial date suggestion the 14th or 15th of June came to my mind.

Game.

Would like to adopt, as I have no 82s.

Thanks for the idea Wolfgang, should make for a rather curious evening.

The N82 I have tasted once, and it was terrible. Not even a bad bottle: just thin. So an ’82 horizontal? Only if I’m in London anyway.

Willing to make placemats for the team though. When things are known, instruct in this thread.

Hmm, I disagree the N82 is terrible, indeed it is not a very strong, meaty port, but still very good indeed. A bit lighter than the 1985 but fairly comparable in my eyes. Croft 82 is also lighter, but has in my eyes a decent finsh. Sandemann 82 so far was the best in my eyes.

Understood, that this offline is not justifying a trip to London; hope by accident you still will be in London for the offline. Will instruct with placemats if offline is going ahead. Thank you in advance for your help.

I can make either date, but would prefer Monday 14th.

I would have to adopt, the only 1982 vintage port. Is anyone willing to offer something for adoption?

do not worry, either Tom or myself will be able to sort you out. (adoption) Prefernce for Monday the 14th of June noted.

Wolfgang,

It is possible I may be able to make this if it is Monday 14th June. Let me know the consensus.

Likewise I have no 1982 so would need to acquire or adopt. I am in Porto in 2 weeks, so there may be a possibility there!

Assuming which, draft of the placemats. The typeface has been chosen for being thin and ugly I hope the choice proves unfounded.

I'd be keen for something on the 14th June, though also have no 1982. Do we have enough bottles for adoption? Or could we extend this to 1983?

To Wolfgang's list I can add Churchill, Eira Velha & Sandeman.

So far we have six/seven attendees and seven bottles - just about enough for an event..

I am a possible; though again I'd need to adopt, if anyone can oblige? I have '82 only in Colheita form (which presumably doesn't qualify!)

A thought has just occurred to me. The Crusting Pipe becomes very warm as a venue in the summer. Last year we found that the warmth of the location in the height of the summer affected some of the ports quite badly, with them becoming very alcoholic. We overcame this with some ice buckets to keep teh bottles in and cool them down a little.

It might be worth booking three ice buckets at the same time as booking the table in a tunnel.

Annoyingly, I was putting this date in the family diary and realised that it is the week that Elizabeth is away on the school residential trip. I am therefore the parent in charge for a week and can't be late back from London.

Sorry, I will have to bow out unless we can move the date back a week to 21 June.

Alternative plan: see how the Bowler performs next Wednesday, and then make a decision.

The 21st should be fine for me too.

Could I be penciled in for a +1, too (assuming we can find enough bottles)?

Hi there,

updated as far as possible. If we finally choose to go to the Crusting pipe I think we need at least 3 ice buckets which i will preorder. Otherwise I am looking fwd to this since I quite like the 82s. Of course this is not a very strong year but drinking currently very nicely indeed.

Regrettably, since posting this, Nuala has had it confirmed she will be working 4 days a week with Monday being the 4th day. I am unable to attend.

The only good news is that she will be working from home on Thursdays in the future, so I may have a little more flexibility to attend tastings - Tuesday or Thursday in the future! NOt this one though I am afraid.

We probably ought to give some further thought to this tasting as, if it goes ahead, it is only 10 days away.

I think the current situation is as follows:

Possible attendees: Port

uncle Tom: Churchill, Eira Velha & Sandeman
WS1: Ferreira, Delaforce, Croft and Noval
Chris Doty: adopt
AHB: adopt
JacobH+1: adopt (x2)
DRT?: Royal Oporto ("some strategic planning is required")
Christopher: Niepoort

I think we are therefore 8 with 9 bottles. I also note that the Sandeman '82 was the house VP at TCP the last time I was there. Perhaps, if we go to TCP, we could arrange the adoption of Uncle Tom's and Wolfgang's bottles to Chris, Alex and myself and group buy a Sandeman '82 off the list?

Alternatively, should we go to the Bowler?

Jacob,

indeed we need to come to terms with this tasting. Apologies for me not having looked into this thread for quite a while since I was on holiday and was busy during this week. I contacted Derek and Christopher, Christopher is likely unable to attend for the whole tasting but will donate the Niepoort and intends to come to the TCP ~10 PM in the evening. Derek will update us next week.
With regards to the venue I am open to try new things (have not been to the bowler yet), but can update on how warm it is in the TCP since I will be there tomorrow and next Monday.
With regards to Ports I am fine with your suggestion.

I'm not going to be able to make this one due to having to be somewhere else :(

If the attendees run out of adoption options you could do what I was going to do and buy the RO82 from Davy's Wine Shop and have it ready for collection at TCP when you arrive. I think they deliver on Thursdays so if anyone is desperate for an RO82 they should order it now.

Hi Derek,

this is sad news! When we will have the tasting we will toast north and will raise a glass on you.
Hopefully the 1982s shine otherwise you will laugh! :?
Otherwise I booked a table in the Crusting Pipe for 8 people next Monday starting at 6:30 PM. Will leave any ports not picked up from me or delivered by me tomorrow night at the TCP for us to open on Monday night. The reason behind my rational is to avoid repercussions in case strike or other problems with air travel occur. This will ensure that the tasting can go ahead without me in case my travel plans are affected. 88)
Of course I would be unhappy and furious but at least the tasting can go ahead.

Updated draft of the placemats.
  • +CHR;
  • +Niepoort;
  • +Royal Oporto;
  • Because there are nine ports, paper size of glasses sheets changed to /USLegal (8½″×14″) please would one of the three UK-resident TPFers holding US Legal paper (being JGH AHB DRT) confirm that they are able to do the printing.

Can do printing. I think the placemats need to be -DRT -Royal Oporto, unless we can / should source one from Davy's as he suggested.

I now have the Noval and the Ferreira, thanks to Wolfgang. :D

Hi Jacob,

can you please print and bring the placemats? Otherwise bad news Cristopher finaly cannot make it at all due to work comittments :( but still donates the Niepoort 1982; thank you very much for this Cristopher!
After haveing picked up the bt from Christopher I deposited the Delaforce and the Niepoort at the Crusting Pipe in order to be opened by the first attendees to arrive. A table for 8 people is booked in the Crusting pipe (guess in one of the tunnels).

Looking fwd to the event!

Niepoort and Delaforce now decanted. There is also a stray bottle of Royal Oporto 1982 at TCP, but unless told otherwise I will assume that this is NOT to be decanted but is instead to be given to Derek when we next see him.

Mystery solved. The box in which the RO was delivered was not given to me, but was addressed to Mr Head - decanting commencing.

As I sit here admiring this beautiful array of fine vintage ports in front of me (RO, Df, Ni) I do find myself wondering whether Cruz released a vintage in 1982.
