Fonseca

I was given a bottle of 1968 Fonseca Guimareans Port as a gift 10 years ago, I love trying different ports would love to keep if but unfortunately it was from an ex and it doesn't have the greatest of associations that I would want to think of whilst savouring such a complex well aged port. I'm considering selling this bottle but am a little unsure of it's value being as it wasn't the greatest vintage year. I have seen the same port advertised on the net ranging from £38.00 to $220.00! The port has been well cellared and the seal is intact, there's a little wear on the label but that's what you would expect. Does anyone have any advice about a decent guide price and maybe a good place to sell it. Guessing maybe users on this sight may be interested?

Hi, welcome to :tpf:! As I am sure you know, Guimareans is Fonseca’s second label which they used to sell Port in years when a full Fonseca vintage Port is not made. 1968 was a year in which very little vintage Port was made; I think Graham’s Malvedos is the only other one to have existed, though that is an attractive and elegant wine.

In terms of the value of your bottle, as a secondary vintage it is not going to have a great deal of value (compared to say, a Fonseca ’66), though rarity will push up the market. Most late 60s secondary vintages I’ve seen sell for around £40 retail. Prices privately or at auction will be lower. The higher prices tend to be achieved by people who specialise in selling unusual bottles (e.g. for those looking for anniversary presents).

I'd say fair retail market in the states when it comes up would probably be 80-120$.

SImply because 68 wasn't widely declared.

Thanks very much for the specialised information you have supplied, figured the lower bracket price would have been correct. Have to think about what to do with it now!!!!

Where are you in the world?

One option would be to bring it along to one of our tasting events? If the memory of your ex is too much to bear you could just pass up the opportunity to taste that glass but you would have lots of others to drink instead and we could take care of your FG68 88)

Being a Fonseca lover, I would drink it.
