The Narrows. Michael Connolly

I'm currently reading The Narrows, by Michael Connolly.
I've read several of his others, including The Poet, which is the precurser for The Narrows.
I think he's a great read. I usually hate Police Drama's. But Poirot, Morse and books by Connolly slip through that standpoint. Apparently the Narrows refers to a river that runs through LA, which used to break its banks, so the City Fathers built concrete walls for it, to try to control it. I'm told its only partially successful.
I'd love to know if Andy has come across this Author who bases most tales in LA. Is it true to life, or is it the sort of limited rubbish, we get over here, (The Bill, Frost, etc)? I dont mind anyone feeling a Police Drama is entertaining, and watchable, but just dont think its true to life, because the majority are not. It can be difficult to solve a murder in half an hour. :D
