Greetings, all!
Anne here. I made my first post a week or so ago on a recent Taylor 1955 tasting notes post, but I thought I should avail myself of the opportunity to introduce myself properly here. I described myself on my first post as a long-time lurker, although that may have been a little misleading. I did join the site a couple of years back, but I had only checked in occasionally for a bit of mild browsing, and hadn't really started to get my teeth into reading heavily until this week. My goodness - what a wealth of port knowledge! I must confess I am slightly intimidated. Fortunately, you seem to be an exceptionally friendly bunch, and I hope to get along to a tasting at some point.
I have been coaxed onto these boards by the redoubtable jdaw1, whom I know from the world of tiddlywinks. A glorious game, indeed, though one which I was content to set aside after a mere two or so years of playing it as an undergraduate, when I realised that the only thing I actually enjoyed about it was the social side viz. the port and the exceptionally complex drinking games. Happily, I have now managed to keep up the "social side" alone for a good 15 years.
I am a Glaswegian by nature and a Londoner by geography. I'm very much looking forward to getting to know you all a little better, and - with your kind and astute guidance - the glories of port better still.
Cheers.
Ajva.

Welcome to
, Anne.
I am a Chesterfield-based Scot but from the posh {cough} east side of our wonderful country.
I look forward to meeting you at a Port tasting some time in the not too distant future.
Derek

I’ll put £20 on Anne winning that fight. Any takers?

Well, I must say, that would make for an interesting first TPF port tasting experience for me. Completely different from what I was hitherto expecting. Still, what the hey. I'm game if Derek is.
I assume gentlemen of your standing and calibre insist on Marquis of Queensberry rules?
Ajva.

I quite agree.
Derek? Your preference?

It is compulsory, under Clause 45b(iv), that every new recruit be subjected to an initiation ceremony that includes beating me up at an off-line.
Normally I don't like that rule but this time I've got twenty quid on me losing so there is a silver lining

No wait - hang on! You took Julian's bet. Surely that means you have £20 on you winning? Or is it all just a big misunderstanding?
Perhaps we could do scissors, paper, stone instead. Fewer glasses broken, perhaps.

Yes. Julian put £20 on you winning and I took the £20.
I'm not very good at rock, paper scissors.
How about this:
We open a case of Fonseca 1966 and stand 6 bottles in front of each of us. We start drinking. First one to fall over is the loser.
Julian can be made to watch.

Derek has had no port tonight, so a misunderstanding is quite probable.
Which of you has a case of F66?

Julian, old pal. Should I take this bet?

Sorry, forgot to mention that it's Julian's round

I was thinking about that. It’s not obvious. Derek is not an insubstantial port drinker. But that is not the sort of thing that one should say of a damsel.
PS: Do experiment with the ‘Quote’ buttons.

Oh dear! A jdaw attempt to be tactful. This only happens in worrying times. Is it too late to withdraw from the challenge?

Actually, can I just pick up on this:
Julian can be made to watch.
I am dubious as to whether anyone can make Julian do anything he doesn't want to. Although, to be fair, I think he'd want to watch the suggested battle, so that particular question would not be settled in this case.

It is, however, possible to be
excessively keen on the ‘Quote’ buttons. As always, moderation in everything, especially moderation itself.

I'll try to ignore the illegal extra space

Anne,
To save you asking: yes, it really is that childish here

In that case, I think I'll fit in just fine.

I always thought admitting that this was the reason for being a member of that club was sufficient reason to be summarily banned for life?
What about a
v. CUTwC joint event? Round 1 can be this game you play with the small pieces of plastic. Round 2 can be a fully-blind Port tasting competition. I assume the former is as much a game of chance as the latter
