Mystery Bottle

It is a Vintage 1924 Port
Bottled & Exported by: Fernandes Costa & Co; Oporto
"One Star"
Imported into San Francisco by the Madeira Wine Co., on Market Street
Prominently displayed, "ORLANDO" Port Wine
Interestingly, there is a P R T near the top of the label with a six point (jewish) star which has the "R" of PRT inset and the P and T on either side of it.

This is NOT the Australian Port named Orlando.

Any help would be appreciated.

Roy,

I have had a flick through some books and the only near reference I can find (p163 of Alex Liddell's Port Wine Quintas of the Douro) is a Francisco Manoel de Costa who was the owner of Quinta dos Canais from the turn of the century until the quinta was sold in 1942. Perhaps this man was related in some way to Fernandes Costa? (or perhaps not).

Charles Sellers makes no mention of the Costa family but, given the possible connection to Canais, perhaps you will find something in Gerald Cobb's Oporto, Older and Newer - which, sadly, I do not have.

Thanks Derek!

I may have to resort to asking the IVDP for help on this brain teaser.
