Jan 27th virtual tasting #portday

Post by g-man »

I'm going to try and set up a tinychat.com conference room for a virtual offline.

Anyone want to do a theme?

Prefereably a bottle we can all source and taste together.

Mmm might we coordinate where you guys in the UK set it up first and we start coming in and hopefully overlapping as the night progresses?

We can get a potential 10 hours coverage of port.

Not sure what kind of night owls you guys are over there across the pond.

Alrighty,

I bought a webcam and set up an account on tinychat.com
the chat room will be #TPFportday on friday the 27th.

I shall be on from 8pm EST onwards.

it's free and allows up to 10 people to video chat with 12 other people to voice chat.

In light of glenn's "warres sucks" comments, I'm tempted to pry open one of the 12 bottles of warre 2000 that I happen to have handy.

It should be readily available, cheap and hopefully coming out of dumb phase.

Not sure I'll still be awake at 1pm as I'll be staying at my sister's house that night but if I am I will try to join you.

I'll try to do it by video conference so that you can see that I am actually a real person and not just some kind of virtual being

I didn't say that! :crying: It's just not my style... along with Dow and Sandeman. I'm more of a Graham/Fonseca/Vesuvio kind of guy.

I'll take my netbook to the FTLOP #PortDay tasting and hope that the hotel has wifi that we can use. I've never used the webcam on it before, though, so I may not have any luck getting it to work.

It will probably be at least 6:30 Pacific time (9:30 Eastern) before I get there and get it set up, but I'll try to join the channel and see what happens!

Unfortunately I don't have my netbook with me at work. It's also not Microsoft-issued, so I can't use it with our wifi here at work anyway.

We can try when I get home tonight, though. I have your home and mobile numbers so I can give you a call if that works for you. Which one should I call?

I would try this, as mentioned on ftlop, but that would require me to move my computer to another part of the house and rehook it all up. I need to get a laptop or something more portable...

I completely forgot to call you last night, so hopefully we'll be able to get it set up tonight.

Of course it's all moot if the hotel doesn't have wifi.

If they have a free rewards/honors/advantage/etc program, sign up for it. They often come with complimentary wifi.

Josh, Ben, Andy and I are online now
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

We've been having a good time, tough to get other folks to join in beyond our group. A few of us decanted live, we're about to get going again.

The wifi at the hotel wasn't free so we weren't able to get online. :-( We did have a great evening though with Ports ranging from a Dalva "Lote" Miguel Castro Silva white Port to a 1977 Fonseca VP. 14 in all and 12 people so we were pretty happy with the turnout!

Sorry guys, late to the party and a little confused... exactly WHO were you calling sweet and voluptuous?

Also - is it possible to re-play the event, is it captured in some kind of video? Thanks.

hahah nufortunately no

it'd be quite embarassing to see me with a bottle of milk in my hand feeding the baby while the other chaps were drinking port ;-)
