Caves Santa Marta [formerly Maria]

When recently browsing in a Portuguese deli which I go to for pastéis de nata, vino verde and those Ports that you don’t often see outside of Portugal, I bought a bottle of Pink Port by this producer which had one of the most fun Port labels I’ve seen.

Unfortunately, I can’t find anything about it on the web. Does anyone know anything about them or what they produce?

Thanks!

Could you please post an image of the label?

Yes, will try to do so when I get a chance. I was hoping I’d find one on the web but no joy :-(

Apparently that bottle got drunk  I’ll see if I can take some pictures the next time I got to that shop.

As Daniel says, very likely it is Santa Marta rather than Maria! If it's Caves Santa Marta it is a co-op winery located in Santa Marta de Penaguião, few km north of Régua, Baixo-Corgo. Decent White Port comes from that area. It is a big co-op with an important rule in the local vinegrowing but as many of the co-op, struggling to survive.

Don't know any Pink from them, so a picture of the label would be very welcome Jacob!

Although google suggests there is both "caves santa maria" and "caves santa marta" - so Santa Maria definitely seems to exist here, for example

So Jacob's pink port from santa maria with a great label has now been turned into a rose wine from santa marta with a pretty uninteresting label...!

Thanks all for correctly pointing out that I had misread the label   And particularly to Oscar for providing some more information. I had thought that that was probably what it was, since this shop sells lots of Port from that part of the Douro.

Anyway, here is a bad picture of the bottle which is slightly more interesting than the ones on the web:

I still think it's the best pink Port label that I've seen. Indeed, it wouldn't be too bad for a normal Port.

The Port itself was fine; not quite as fruity and sweet as I would like and a touch spirity, but that seems to be the nature of most pink Ports. I can't help thinking it would be a better wine if only fortified to 15-16% .

Go on then; what’s a better pink Port label?

I don't care. It was the second sentence that made me fall off my chair!

I wasn't thinking you'd put it on the next Noval Nacional but it would be quite good for one of those fun affordable Ports that the industry keeps trying to produce to expand the market. Something like the Warre Otima. Perhaps, though, the set of Ports which I regard as normal is greater than that for DRT*?

And even harder if constrained to php notation.
  • {Normal|JGH} ⊃ {Normal|DRT}
?

ah; the ⊃ was the symbol I was searching for.
