Ramos Pinto social media-tized :)

Hi,

I'm a Port fanatic and quite new to this forum. I have been reading your posts and this seems to be one of the best Port resources around in terms of information and update.

Anyway, just wanted to make a small contribution and share that recently Ramos Pinto has also established themselves in the social media scene with a new Facebook page, blog and Youtube channel. It's nice to see that smaller producers are also taking advantage of all available web resources to get their message across.

I just hope they won't succumb to the "ego-trip" that so many Port shippers seem to have adopted, basically using those social media channels as one more way to promote themselves instead of sharing true value-added information!

If they could get their 20-year-old tawny into the UK market at under £30 a bottle, I would have thought they’d sell vast quantities but the prices for everything seem extremely high. I think when I last looked their 2000 vintage port was apparently selling at £50 a bottle...

I am in the middle of organising a fantastic tasting in GER with Joao Nicolau de Almeida including many of his old treasures, such as 1880, 1927, 1931, 1935, 1945 and so on. Most probably on October 13th. If you need any further info, let me know as I am regularly emailing to the guys.

They appear to have appointed a sole importer in the UK who has in turn appointed a sole retailer..

..result? - No trade terms available to other potential retailers, and no sensible prices..

I don't believe that any of these 'exclusive' dealership arrangements ultimately benefit the producers..

..the sooner there is a free market for port, the better for everyone!

Guys,

This thread has gone slightly off-topic, but just checked their FB page. They adopted the new timeline layout and are offering a Port wine and food pairing guide for free, as a downloadable pdf. Looks good! At least I haven't found anything similar on other producers' pages.

Sure I do - I love their Ports... especially their 20YO Tawny :) It was the first Port I had a long time ago and for some reason it stayed in my memory. That led me to find out more about them as a producer and that's when I found out that they were quite forward-thinking in their early days in terms of advertising.

Anyway - just came back to this forum to see all updates, came across some answers to my original post and thought I'd update it with what I had seen on Facebook a while ago. I am a big fan of companies getting onto social media and am a subscriber of many Port pages.

Sorry for my bias... But it's like they say - you always remember your first Port :)

Chris,

Curious as to what you mean by this statement? There are not that many producers using social media in the Douro. So please tell us which ones have an "ego-trip."

And what do you expect them to use social media for but to promote their products, isn't that the point?

What "value-added" information would you like to see that they aren't doing?
