Tuesday 18th September

As luck would have it, I am on a training course in London on the 18th September and would be very happy to delay my return home after being fully trained.
Just in case you were wondering, I am assuming that my training course is designed to get me from a state of summer Port deprivation into a fit state to be able to cope with the Warre v Fonseca tasting the following week (on Monday the 24th).
Anyone care to help with my training?

I was planning to do some training that day too so will join you and we can inspire one another to reach peak performance in time for the big day.
Is this how rowers prepared for the Olympics?

I'm not sure. Are there any of the GB rowers you would like me to invite along and ask?

From
Oddbins London Bridge, for £26, I have purchased a 75cl bottle of Sandeman Vau 2000, which will also be at this tasting.
Placemats coming. So far this seems to be AHB, JDAW, and DRT, with two bottles and three halves of Sandeman Vau. We could accommodate one or two more people (and ports, of course).

Looks good to me.
Can I suggest that we substitute "excellent" for "great" on the unusual question sheet? This would allow a single letter abbreviation to be used to record each person's vote for each wine.

And such a noble sacrifice!
Oddbins website did not mention the Vau, yet it was there. Please look in your local off licences, just in case. We are now a little on port, and sticking with the theme would be helpful. (Do we gain much by reporting that the SV97 was not as good as G70? Well, we taste G70 again, which is always a joy, but a G70 might be better saved until a later tasting. So Sandeman Vau much preferred, even a repeat bottle.)

I have a half of 97 and full bottle of 2000.
The wine shop messed up the order and instead of the half of 99 i ordered, sent a further half of 2000.
I have offered these for a separate tasting, so will confirm whether that is going ahead before committing to bring to this.

- +Decanter labels;

Does this mean we are to bring Sandeman Vau or bring nothing?

That was my intention. If we buy lots of SV, then it would be a daily drinker, not a tasting star. I’m trying to test it in something like battlefield conditions.

Thank you.
So we’ll be a touch light, but with RAYC always late, and beer available nearby, we’ll squeeze by.

Hmmm, i thought the Vau was the amuse-bouche and didn't appreciate we weren't bringing other port as well. I will probably bring one but anyone who wants battlefield conditions is, of course, welcome to abstain from drinking it.
And if the general idea is not to bring other VP, is it worth including any other benchmark ports for which buying opportunities may arise?
eg: G crusted, Warre/Quevedo LBV, Tesco 94? Sains 03? Malv/Bomfim 98/99?

This is a good idea. Please can Field Marshall JDAW issue orders promptly?

Splendid plan. Please let me know what so that the placemats can be updated. (SCP-DF
F ‘discovered’ Tesco yesterday, and bought a bottle of the ’94 (Symington, presumably QH). Delicious decanted about 1pm.)

jdaw1 wrote:Bonus question: any objection to pop-and-pour for the multiple bottles of Sandeman Vau?
Given the likely destiny of the vast majority of the SV we might buy I think pop-and-pour is as near battlefield conditions as we can get
Please choose my contribution from:
>> Warre LBV 1981
>> Warre LBV 1995
>> Graham Crusted bottled 2004
Or I could go out today and buy a Tesco 1994 VP.

My vote is the Graham Crusted bottled 2004.

SCP-DFD just called me from Tesco to ask if there was anything needed. I did what anyone would do in the circumstances and ordered a Tesco (QH) 1994 VP.
I am happy to bring that and the G2004C if that would be helpful?

You are not playing fair and are cornering the market in decent Morgan '91 substitutes.
I could bring a Morgan '91, but appear to have been beaten to the punch on other options such as Tesco '94 or Sainsbury '03.

Morgan 1991 is an excellent idea given that we are looking for its replacement.
Tesco 1994 - you are welcome to bring one, or I can bring mine?
Sainsbury 2003 - not yet offered so please feel free to bring along.
Cruz 1995 - no thanks.

I think a Sainsbury '03 would be more appropriate. A Morgan '91 has the unfair advantage of 8-12 years additional maturity over the Vau that we are considering as its replacement.
I shall bring the Sainsbury '03.

Anyone have a Bomfim 92 on them? i am happy to adopt - either in cash or to be replaced with one of my own in due course (once out of Seckfords). Might be an interesting comparison.
I'll also see if Waitrose have the Warre 01 LBV. or i could bring Quevedo 04 LBV. up to you guys.

RAYC: we have 5½ bottles (3½ of SV, G04C, Sainsbury ’03) between four people. That’s OK. No need to adopt. Come empty-handed. Often enough you come over-laden.

I think for the sake of aesthetic completeness DRT needs to inform us where he bought the Graham Crusted. I will be twitchy all night if he does not do so or if you don't include this information on the placemat.

The G04C was purchased
here as part of a lot of 30ish bottles in a 25% off sale. Some of those bottles went to Holburn and have not been seen or heard of since

No TPF member lives in Holborn, so they must be gone.
Note self: add to placemats both Asda and Wolfgang. And maybe DB92.

The more the merrier!
We had the foresight (well, Julian did) last week to change our booking from the small room to Table 6, the long one in the alcove. This has the advantage of being able to accommodate additional people more easily than the small room.

Happy for more people to join in but does this mean we are now in Port deficit?
Do we need to find a couple of double mags from somewhere to avoid going thirsty?

I’ve phoned.
No, not the office. No, not table six. We have the function room, and I’ve requested 65 glasses.
