Lots of 1996 was punted out through UK supermarkets a few years ago. I find them to be solid but early maturing that make great drinking now and over the next decade. I've got loads, all of them costing between £10-15 per bottle

The Warre's 96 has been on offer in supermarkets a few times last year and seems ok (nothing special); I've had a couple and still have a couple but probably won't buy more.
The Fonseca 96 (often sold in the box with filter cup on promotion) seems good as an early maturing, low cost VP option; I have had a few, still have a few and expect to go through a few more.
The Vesuvio 96 I've had a couple of times and been very impressed with - I was suprised by your 'weaker' comment; I haven't tasted many Vesuvios, so perhaps that is relative, but I was impressed enough the times I've had the V96 to have bought a half case of it last month.

i believe i have always preferred the 94, 95, 97 to the 96 for vintages around the same years which is why i mention 'weaker'

I stand corrected,
i popped a bottle of the 96 tonight based on phil's comments and was certainly pleasantly surprised at the youthfulness of this bottle.
felt like it hasn't aged at all.
medium bodied, but certainly not thin.
will post notes.
