Delaforce 58 and friends - October 15th

Posted: 12:35 Mon 24 Sep 2012
by uncle tom
I recently secured (but have not yet collected) a case of Delaforce '58

This is a rare beastie - I've never tried it before and nor, it seems, have many others..

So end of next week or early the week after, I thought it might be fun to have a casual sighted offline in London of VPs you don't often see..

Date: Oct 15th

Venue: The Bunghole

Regrettably if it were Monday 8th I will not be there. That said, other dates that week little more likely!

Any day from Mon 1st to Wed 17th, yes please, with light-drinking guest (my port-liking mother-in-law).

Could we do Monday 15th instead?

Hi,

Monday 15th of October is OK for me. Since I guess nobody has tried Croft da Roeda 1970 yet I will bring this round. What a we do the comparison to a Croft 1970?

A bit a geeky tasting idea but should be fun.

Are we agreed on the 15th then?

I might be bringing the bottle that is the subject of the thread ‟Who gave me the Burgundy and the Port?”.

Hopefully, since this is the only one of the days that everyone (including me!) seems to be able to make.

Are we declaring what we bring in advance or just declaring on the day?

For some time we’ve been meaning to do a 1927 horizontal. Would this be an opportune moment?

Given a theme of port not often seen, I shall bring my only bottle of Bomfim 1979.

Should not Cynthia receive credit for the BBR 70 if she is the donator?

Mine will be RO58. As it cost me approximately the same as an undiscounted LBV and is quite possibly undrinkable, i shall have a look for something else that we haven't had at a tasting recently and post a list of options. Before i do so, how strictly do we want to stick to the initial theme ("VPs you don't often see"), or how much do we just want nice port?

OK, date fixed as Oct 15th.

Can someone PM me the contact details for TBH and I'll check to see if 'our' room is free..

There’s very little nice port that I often see. Even, for example, Fonseca 1985 is not something that I often see. Indeed, far too infrequently.

However, as information for assessing quantities, my special guest is not a heavy drinker. I’ll be impressed if she clears half a bottle.

OK. I've stayed silent so far - but does anyone else really dislike the flower-patterned block lettering in the centre of each glass circle? It hurts my eyes!

Does it not hurt your eyes?

I can live with it, I shall just wear my sunglasses that night.

Hi,

apologies for complicating things. I am in trouble. It is now being very likely a very good friend and vintage port afficionado from Switzerland will visit me over the weekend 13th/14th of October. Furthermore another friend from the USA (also wine afficionado) pops over the pond and would like to meet up too.
May I cheelily ask if it would it be OK for both to come as my guests to this gathering? Obviously I will provide more weird port to accomodate.

Please let me know

regards

Wolfgang

If we're sticking to theme, I've got Mayer Sworder's 1985 (Quinta do Sibio) or Lamelas 2007

If we were to modify the theme to go for ports which there are no recent notes on TPF, i have Niepoort 92.

If we're going with jdaw1's anti-theme, i can bring something more likely to bring drinking pleasure! (but the Lamelas was rather good when i tried it)

Do't think so - is that even possible?

i imagine this is like the BBR own selection.

Mayor Sworder was an old City wine merchant: history. The Quinta do Sibio in question is, i believe, the Real Companhia Vehhla one.

I have now been informed that my departure from Blighty (LHW) is schedule to take place around 23:00 on 15th of October. My diary says I have a meeting in London at 15:00 for about one hour.

Can anyone think of something I could be doing between the end of the working day and 21:00ish?

It might help you to know that The Bung Hole is very conveniently placed for the Piccadilly line.

Hi,

my guests names are Theresa and David, both right handed. Ports I will bring are (Croft da Roeda 1970, Croft 1970 for comparison and an Offley Crusted bottled in 1965). I do not know from when the Crusted is, probably 63 since it is lovely as Tom can confirm after we opened this as an emergency pop and pour in the Bell  . Thought since DRT is coming this might be a good addition.

Delaforce '58 bottles now safely in my custody..

English bottled, unlabelled, with embossed wax capsules. Remarkably, none of the capsules appear to be broken, which is rare for a case of this age..

What a wonderful idea. Thank you. I will spend a few quiet hours at The Bung Hole before heading for LHW via Holborn station.

Tom, I think we discussed adoption - is that still possible? (please email options if so)

Note to self: the last time I drank port with Tom within a few hours of flying went horribly wrong. Don't do it again!

Disaster has struck.

My flight takes of at 21:00, not 23:00, which means I don't have enough time to attend the tasting.

Sorry chaps, I'm out (again)
