To hand are Warre LBVs from 1981, 1982, 1984 and 1986. This suggests a plan. One 1986 has been tasted.

Who? When?

Also 1979 and 2002.

I would be very keen. They have always showed extremely well when I have had the chance.

Between us, with no extra purchasing, we have at least eight. That’s not shabby.

I'm in, and so is my 1995.

How about we do a Warre vs. Warre LBV tasting and compare the LBVs with Vintages from (approx.) the same year? Should not be that more expensive and very educative, I suppose.

We have ten LBVs already. If this is to be a big formal 20+ bottle thing, yes. But I’d prefer an informal LBV tasting, perhaps with just two or three near-matching VPs.

Perfect idea. As the date prior to the bft might be good to go. Shall we plan on having this then?

I would happily contribute my LBV 74 and check if I have a 2000. Futhermore I would suggest to include 1970 or 77, 85, 94 and 2000.

Do you have these, or are you suggesting we find them somewhere?

This is rapidly changing from an informal "throw in a bottle or two of LBV" tasting into something that will require financial balancing to be performed by the organiser. If that is what is intended, fine. If not, the organiser should define the boundaries.

Yes, but in the light of comments received. My plan was a few Warre LBVs, not very formal. Mine didn’t cost me much, so seemed a good start.

Understood. I'll start looking for a Warre 1927.

Currently we are six people and ten Warre LBVs. Even if two are over-mature, that could be a splendid evening.

I can make that 6 / 11 with a confirmed Warre 2000 LBV, as well as potential to supplement some of the others already on offer.

So we have people and Port, but not a date. When?

Edit: Axel, above, suggested immediately prior to the BFT.

Londoners tend to be more organised and enthusiastic than our New York cousins. So it might be best for us to proceed, and if you can do the same date, that’s splendid. (And please could NY do so in a separate thread, for administrative simplicity.)

With those I meant the Vintages of Warre for educative/ comparison reasons.

Any objections to the Warre LBVs happening on Tuesday 23rd April 2013, that being, of course, the day of VP-lovers’ favourite saint? As well as being the day before the BFT.

With Calem tasting cancelled/postponed, I find myself staying overnight in London on Apr 23rd with a serious risk of thirst...

what's this "or" rubbish? ;D

I could bring any of 82/84/86 LBV and/or 77/83/85 VP if doing VP as well.

A tentative booking has been made for the Function Room in the obvious location. However, there is, that evening, ‟a 70-person quiz night”, so, as well as some noise and obstacles between us and the facilities, we would have to eat in the Function Room.

My vote is for TBH anyway. Objections?

VP: a decision has been made. As a control, we’ll include Warre 1985 VP, which is middle-of-the-pack in terms of age.

Added to this will be the minimum number of VPs that keeps bottles ÷ people ≥ 1¼. We currently have 11×LBV + 1×VP = 12 bottles, by this rule enough for 9 people (12 ÷ 9 = 1⅓ > 1¼ > 1â…• = 12 ÷ 10). With the maximum 14 people this rule would require a total of 14×1¼ = 17½ bottles, but some might be LBVs.

Is anyone conveniently close to Cirencester? If so, an auction in the next few days have some Warre 1969 LBV. I'll happily buy them (especially since it is my birth year) and bring one along to the Warre LBV tasting if they go for a fair price. Since collection or packing would likely cost as much as the bottles, if anyone is planning to attend or located close enough to pick them up easily, please let me know?

The New Yorkers (well, Chris Doty, who is a large proportion of the New Yorkers’ activity) has proposed a Warre VP & LBV tasting for autumn 2013 in New York City, perhaps at Alison Eighteen.
DRT then wrote:This feels like a good opportunity for a transatlantic effort. Parallel Warre VP + LBV tastings in London and New Amsterdam on the same day and with the same line-up, each with a Symington guest.
If that is to happen, and it is being discussed in the board and by email, then there will still be a London tasting on Tuesday 23rd April, just a different one.

One possible replacement is ‟The Dirty Dozen”, being a case of mostly unknowns bought by the team in 2012. Another would be to re-time the 1983-1985 Double Horizontal currently scheduled for Tuesday 2 April 2013. Or something different.

So, for the moment, there is some ‘up in the air’ about arrangements.

This Warre LBV tasting will happen, hopefully prelapsarian, but not on 23rd April, which is to be a Dirty Dozen tasting, for which a thread will soon be started.

The Dirty Dozen having bumped the Warre LBVs from their place at St George’s Day, a new date is needed.

Who can make which Tuesdays in May: 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th?

You are confused. The Warre LBVs were set for April, but have been moved to happen possible once, possibly twice, one of which might be September(ish). There is still to be a tasting on 23rd April, but of ‘The Dirty Dozen’, being two sets of blind bottles that have come into the possession of the team.

Now this much I know as I'm on the list for that.. and could even bring something.

They would be, but the seller appears to have a very high reserve, especially given the quantity of bottles. The same seller placed 10 of these bottles up around June(?) last year on bidforwine, and I think the bidding reached somewhere in the 250-300 mark and did not sell. One has presumably been drunk as there are now lots of 4 and 5 bottles, where the 4 bottle lot has a bid of £135 and is still reserve not met, so the reserve must be >£35 / bottle. Old LBV is not a high-demand item, especially in any quantity, this does not compare favourably to recent cases of good condition W70 and W77 VP going for 400-450/case (12-bottle) all-in at auction over the last six months.
