Wed 17th April - Oscar Quevedo

Posted: 07:33 Mon 08 Apr 2013
by Alex Bridgeman
Oscar Quevedo is visiting London overnight on Wednesday 17th April and we plan to entertain him in typical Port Forum style:

Venue - tbc, but probably the Bung Hole
Tme - 6:30pm
Theme - bring a bottle of port to share (note: does not have to be vintage; Oscar quite likes sweet, brown sticky port <<shudder in horror icon>>)
Who:
 1. Oscar Quevedo
 2. AHB
 3. DRT
 4. CMAG
 5. IDJ
 6. JDAW
 7. Ronnie Roots (about 9pm)
 8. WS1 (now confirmed)
 9. BMHR

I’m probably in awaiting approval from SCP-DFS.

First draft of the placemats.

And the next Tuesday 17th April is in 2018. That is much advance notice of a tasting it might have been less misleading to the readers to have included the year in the title.

Very droll - day of the week corrected.

Have you booked the obvious location? If not, I shall.

It is also the first day of the County cricket season championship games - play starts at 11am at Lord's. I was hoping to make some of that, so now I have even more excuse to take a half day from work! Let's see what the diary secretary says!

I am still awaiting permission.

The BBC, in an article entitled Thatcher funeral set for next week, wrote:The funeral of Baroness Thatcher will take place on Wednesday, 17 April, Downing Street has announced.
(Not that the webmaster of number10.gov.uk has cared to tell us.)

Should this affect our dress code? I say yes.

The procession will come near Holborn:
Image
Expect difficulties with transport.

Edit: the webmaster has woken up, but rather than making a new page dated today, the announcement made today has been added to yesterday’s announcement: ‟The service will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday 17 April.” Further down the page is written ‟Crown copyright 2012” sigh. On the plus side, I do prefer Number 10’s punctuation to that of the BBC.

Edit edit: a fuller announcement, correctly dated 9th April, has appeared.

My participation now looking more likely than not. Hoping to take afternoon off, weather permitting, and watch some cricket at Lord's before. If so, and anyone fancies joining me, drop me a PM.

I'm on the move using my phone. I may be in a port free zone! At least Tapatalk is keeping me in touch. I'm grateful at least for that much.

I am tempted by this in view of the fact that I've recently asked for a few words on Quevedo on a separate post to accompany the table named after said Port House at my upcoming nuptials (serendipitious?). However, I will require guidance as to what to bring and an indication as to typical expenditure at such affairs. So can the powers that be put me down for a tentative place and I'll then firm up (once I've cleared with the erstwhile Mrs J)? I should warn that my experience only extends to imbibing the stuff!

Depending on appetite, you’ll be £40ish down for food (and we tip well, rather than pay corkage), and you’ll need to bring a bottle of something worth drinking (if VP, aim for a vintage ≥1960 but ≤1992).

Unfortunately i will have to miss this as i will be in Majorca...

But - if you don't have something suitable - it may also be possible to "adopt" a bottle from someone else or simply purchase from the Davy's wine-list

I have VPs that satisy this criterion but isn't decant time going to be a problem? Bottle would have to be brought up (on the train), on the day.

My normal habit is to stand the bottle a few days before an offline, double-decant it in the morning before I leave for work and then walk into the Bung Hole (aka Davy's Bar and Grill, Holborn) at the appropriate time with bottle in hand. While not perfect, it seems a practical compromise.

Decant at home, pour it back into the bottle, put a cork in it and bring it with you on the train

It is largely down to a lack of Vitamin P.

Mine is another vote for you to bring red.

I have one bottle of brown. I am yet to decide whether to bring this bottle or a bottle of red.

I am in town that day, but have another tasting to attend first. Would it be problematic if I arrive somewhat late, probably around 9PM? Would be great to see Oscar again.

Oh, and I would have to adopt (or buy something from Davy's list).

Hi,

would be interested to join as well but cannot say for sure if I can. Have been away for 2 weeks and need to check schedule first. Please also confirm that brown sticky port is tawny/Colheita. If so I might be able to bring something interesting.

No problem, you would not be the first person to arrive at an offline around 9pm - nor the last!

Davy's currently have on their bar wine list Smith Woodhouse 1983, Dow 1994, Offley 1977 and Taylor 1980. A call to the Bung Hole on +44 207 831 8365 would sort out one of these. You're probably too late to order off the Davy's Off-license Wine List.

The double decant is noted. Assume that this is not blind and so need to mask? Might also try and rustle up a bottle of brown sticky stuff in case of anything unforeseen!

Blinding is optional, but easily done. Tin foil works well (and there will be sticky labels to add to the outside, to distinguish bottles).

Hi,

just separated very fine sediment and double decanted the brown sticky stuff. Was also able to put the older orginal driven cork back in. Really morish juice Rob would say. And the smell..... :D
Obviously tonight Oscar is intended to be shown the merits of vintage port versus brown sticky stuff. Not sure if this is gonna work.
Not a lot of label left but still put bt in tinfoil.

My pair were decanted at 3pm. One cork disintegrated; one fell into the bottle.

Start at 6pm-ish.
