Warre's 1963 Private Cellar Vintage Port

Post by Dich Oatley »

Good afternoon,

We have some fantastic Warre's 1963 Private Cellar port from the Symington family. Usually it retails at around £250, but we are offering it for £173.

Who is or would not be interested in this prospect. Straight from their cellar in the Douro.

Let me know if this is of interest to anyone or who we should/could talk to.

Best regards to all

Dich

i take it from this that you have purchased / been given this and are now looking to sell on.

Is it just one bottle, or do you have many?

if just one, i'd imagine that an auction is your best bet - probably Straker Chadwick. Some of the bigger merchants might be interested (Wilkinson Vintners, Seckford Wines, Nickolls & Perks, Underwood Wine Warehouse, Peter Wylie, Fine & Rare wines, or some of the online "birth year" port and wine sellers (e.g. vintagewineandport.co.uk)), but are unlikely to get too excited about a single bottle. If it's a case of 4 (or whatever multiple it is that the Symingtons sold this), that's possibly a different story, depending on where it's been stored since you took delivery.

Apologies - if you are Dich Oatley of the "General Wine Company", then you will probably know all that i posted above already!

For what it's worth, i'm not sure this description on the General Wine Company Website is quite correct (though happy to be corrected myself!)

It looks to me like a new selo and new wax seal were applied prior to release (possibly also re-corked, though i dont know enough about this release to speculate)

I've had the Warre 1963 Private Cellar release once, and really enjoyed it. For what it's worth, that one bottle was the best bottle of Warre 1963 that I have tasted and I rated it 95/100, but then I have also rated Mayor Sworder bottlings consistently in the 93-94/100 range (4 different bottles).

The price you've offered is very fair given that it is inclusive of VAT and duty. I am tempted to buy one and might call in to one of the GWC shops over the next couple of days to pick one up.

Thanks for posting here and please come back with little snippets and offers like this one, but please also be transparent that you are posting with an interest in the industry. And for complete transparency, I will disclose that my interest in the industry is purely as a consumer!
