Port Suggestions for a Bris

Within the next month, my wife and I will have the good fortune to hold a Bris (jewish service for an 8 day old boy). Being a reform jew has its privileges, as mohels (who perform the Bris) require only that "a sweet wine be used" -- Kosher isn't necessary. You can all imagine my elation at being so well prepared for at least one component of the impending life-changing events.

Now the question comes "what bottle shall have the honor?"
  • It must be a good bottle, dodgy and unreliable port will not do.
  • It must be a worthy bottle. GC80 is very nice, but it is not nearly nice enough.
  • It must be sweet and not tannic. F85 is too young.
Here are some options:
  • Fonseca1977
  • Fonseca1970
  • Graham's 1966 This was selected, and it was delicious
  • Graham 1980
  • Dow 1963
Opinions?

G66.

G80 is too young. F77 is either a) too young, or b) not worthy. D63... you said sweet.

F70 is also a good option, but I'd still go with the G66.

I would say F70. Perfect balance in terms of age and sweetness. Congratulations!

Am I allowed to say that it should be a bottle with a proper capsule? There can be some ceremony to its removal.

Graham 1966 - should be a fabulous bottle.

Presumably the port is not just used for the sterilising effect of the alcoholic content...

Personally, I would lean towards the 66 Graham - rich, smooth, complete. My favourite port.

As others have said, the 70 Fonseca would also be good. Spicy and powerful.

Mine too! As soon as this kid figures out when he'll show up, I do hope he'll get invites out to both of us :)

No no, drinking it is required. A few drops for him, the rest goes to the audience. It's important, though, that he get started on the right stuff.

But not one of those hard plastic ones that you have to remove by holding it over a boiling kettle and prising it off with a blunt knife

DRT’s mission accomplished: perhaps my making that jest was unwise.

How ironic the the bottle also needs a bris!--Can the Rabbi do that too?

It's about time for me to make a decision -- Elijah was born a few days ago, weighing a healthy 8lbs 6oz. We're finally back from the hospital and settling in.

Congratulations!! Wonderful news. Parenthood is loads of fun--and a challenge.

Now you have to hope for a good harvest for this year so Elijah will have proper things to drink in 20-100 years.
