Wimbledon Doty: 1966 Horitzontal - Bunghole, June 27th - 7pm
Posted: 23:27 Sun 12 May 2013
by Chris Doty
Team,
We have settled on the evening of June 27th for an exploration of the 1966 vintage @ the Bunghole.
We have registered interest from:
CSD - Croft
AHB - Graham
JDAW - Dow?
DRT - Gould
PhilW - Warre
Danny J
RAYC* - Fonseca
WS1 - Noval
It looks like we'll be able to construct a beautiful line up, given the wines people have been able to vouch for. I will plan on contributing Croft.
Looking forward to it!

I could make a London (or Cambridge or Wenden's Ambo) event on the evening of Thursday 20th with some juggling of diaries. I could also make London on the evenings of Monday 24th and Thursday 27th.

I can’t do Thu 20th, nor Fri 21st, nor Sat 22nd.

I should be able to make it for an offine in June 20-28, and would be good to meet you this visit. As I'm based just north of Cambridge, I can easily make a Cambridge/Wendens night (didn't get your U.T. reference...) or would probably be able to make a London offline (with enough warning of exact decided date).
Wines I'd like to open... far too many

I'll be happy with any plan which involves drinking delicious port and meeting Mr. D.

I have examined all the options, moved everything that can be moved, found innovative solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems and am happy to confirm that any night between 20th and 28th June works for me
What to drink? Perhaps we should kill off some youngsters and have a 1970s horizontal?

I had a "Doh!" moment when I realised the answer to this on the drive to a client this morning. The context of University and fridges had temporarily thrown me off!

Ok -- well, I sense a groundswell of support, mixed with some logistical wrinkles.
I had been thinking about maybe trying a 1966 tasting, but am certainly open minded.
Shall we pencil in Thursday the 27th at the Bunghole for the time being and see if Tom wants to host a fieldtrip some other time during the period of the 20th-28th?
Looking forward to it!

I meant to reply earlier to say that i am in and flexible on dates.
I am very much in favour of a 1966 tasting (see
here for the last run-out they had!)
I have Fonseca (nice looking english-bottled stock) and Noval (BBR-bottling). I also have Croft, Graham and Sandeman, but am low on stock so would prefer to provide one or other of the former two bottles unless i am the only one who can provide them. Dow 66 (BBR-bottling) was also recently acquired, but not yet in hand. [have one other different bottling of Dow 66 that was a gift from Phil and can be opened if he attends]
I would also say that, though pricey, the
1966 Gould Campbell currently on BBR's list is from the stock released ex-cellars last year and (going by the example i had in Porto last summer) is absolutely fantastic...

Fair summary.
Chris Doty wrote:I had been thinking about maybe trying a 1966 tasting, but am certainly open minded.
It is never wrong to have a 1966 tasting. Not in the morning, not at lunch, not in the pre-siesta afternoon, not in the post-siesta afternoon, not in the pre-dinner evening, not in the post-dinner evening. Just not wrong.

Currently works for me. As a precaution, I have booked the Function Room at
The Bung Hole (57 High Holborn, London WC1V 6DT, tel 020 7831 8365,

Seconded, with the minor addition of early morning after the 1963 has inexplicably evaporated.

It would not be wrong, but might be a little wasteful, to have a 1966 tasting the evening after the BFT or similar large tasting of very young ports.
I can contribute a choice of one from:
- Berry's Own Label (Warre)
- Dow
- Fonseca
- Graham
- Noval
- Smith Woodhouse (but this is my only bottle)
- Taylor
- Warre

I have a ’66. The label says Warre 1966. The capsule says Dow 1966. No, I don’t know.
Will that work? We could hide the cork and guess from the taste.

That sounds exciting. Who bottled it?

Hi,
Thursday the 27th of June would also work for me. If possible I would like to attend. Can definitely bring a Grahams 66 (Justerinis botteling). Have also Noval and Croft 66 but they are without any labels or indications on the capsule and can be intriguing.I do not mind since both sources are good. But it is a bit of a bugger for tastings when you want to know in advance what it is.
If I am lucky there is somewhere a bt of Sandeman 66 left. But I am not sure and may have been subject to a "KillerB"

.

Between AHB, Wolfgang and I, iwould advocate that Dow, Fonseca and Graham are provided.
Going by my one experience of it, it would be nice to include Noval (i could offer one of untested provenance - but nice looking with good levels / condition - for adoption).
It would also be a shame to exclude Taylor if all the other TFP / SFE big boys are there.
I would love to try Ferreira....(oh, and Niepoort / Nacional while we're at it!)
Next question: is this to be done semi-blind?

I own 1 bt of Ferreira 1966 which I reserved for a Ferreira tasting if I recall correctly. Niepoort 1966 is very difficult and expensive to get hold of. It is an excellent port!

Probably not an issue, but I would now not be able to bring the Dow; after examining all bottles today, I found the Dow capsule had disintegrated, and the cork was failing. On extraction, it was a slightly spongy cork which simply seemed not quite wide enough; In any case, I immediately decanted the win, and it is superb, so no harm done; just an unexpected opening of a Dow66 on a Saturday night - what a hardship! However, as it was my only bottle of this, it is now no longer available for Jun 27; am assuming I will be bringing the W66 anyway.
Note to Rob - your bottle is the companion to this one from the same source; hopefully yours will be fine, but definitely worth checking the capsule to be sure.

This should now be updated to phenomenal; perhaps the best bottle I have drunk this year, with possible except of the Niepoort '42. Wow. I'm in (or half a bottle through) port heaven

I'd submit a tasting note, but... ahhhhh... bliss.....

If there are enough people who wish to taste this, we should buy it
from wherever we can get it. It's only June 27th once a year.

Excellent Wolfgang! We were sorry to miss you at the Doty Cup. I look forward to catching up.
I've penciled in your contribution as the Noval, let me know if that seems suitable.

Greetings all! Please count me in for this. I looked up the address of this place, but not sure I found the same. (Might have changed names?). Anyway, can someone please provide the address. Also, what are some bottles available for adoption? (or I could chip in - whatever works best for the tasting group).
Thanks, and Saude!

At last year's mini-66 horizontal, jdaw1 was in need of a bottle and purchased a Taylor 66 from the Davy's list that showed very nicely (
TN here). Since Taylor is the one "big boy" that is yet to be included in the line-up, that might be a good place to start - especially as Davy's still seem to have it on their
list. I'd have thought it might be worth speaking toThe Bunghole to arrange delivery to The Bunghole directly in plenty of time for it to stand and settle (or i can do so if instructed).
I'd imagine next on the list are a "confirmed" Dow 66 or a Sandeman. If no one has those available for adoption, there's some nice-looking stock of Morgan 66 available
here. I presume from the same auction stock as the sole bottle of this that seems to be in the
TN archives. I recently made a large purchase with this company, so again am happy to liaise if instructed and take delivery / stand / decant.
Any thoughts from the congregation? Chris?

Agree that Taylors would be the obvious candidate; FRW have some with missing labels for fair price (they also have a NN66..). If neither Taylors nor Niepoort then I'd have tried to find a Noval 66 next.

Their minimum order is £200. I am getting some stuff delivered from my store with them this week, to my Dad's in London. If anybody else wants to order something from them, so that we can get over the threshold, I will go for the Taylor and have it added on to the delivery I'm expecting..

Does anyone have anything to bring, which I would pay you the money for?
If by chance nobody has a bottle to sell me, I will, of course, pay cash to the group to cover the financial aspect of my share.
Thanks.

Panic (hopefully) over. I think I have secured a Taylor. A few Essexian options have presented themselves and one will hopefully come good. I will most likely arrive early and decant at the Bung Hole, as I'm only flying in that morning. If anyone else is there earlier on in the day, all well and good.
