Unconnected.
They instituted a policy about a decade ago of not owning nor serving super-expensive foreign wines. Fair enough.

We could argue that that is what this site is dedicated to... At least in part. Or in port.

Is this any different from what other owners of large stocks of wine do? Buy two cases of the wine you want to drink; drink one and sell one to fund the purchase of the next two cases of fine wine.

It does provided you don't drink or sell them too quickly.
For example, I bought Vesuvio 1994 on release @ £20 per bottle. I could sell today for about £40 per bottle and buy the 2011 vintage for about the same.
Yes, I know that this ignores storage costs, opportunity cost etc, but every little bit helps.

When a government is executing a strategy of austerity there are limited opportunities to open £5,000 bottles of wine without committing political suicide regardless of which country they were from.
...and if you really want to buy a bottle of something British that costs more than $10,000 it is likely to have been made from malt rather than grapes. Perhaps
this?

funny. it says
none of the bottles were offered for public sale.
Instead, each bottle was gifted to public figures considered by the company to have made 'a significant contribution to modern life'. The list of those considered worthy of a bottle of this precious blend has remained secret.
So which ungrateful bum is offering theirs for sale??
