Despite the phrasing, that might work. But please explain how somebody making such a comment could non-ironically illustrate the story with:

I can understand that it might make you feel taller, but look taller?

Would it be too unfair to suggest that anyone who thinks a port sipper will elevate their social status, is, to some degree, a pretentious peasant?

But I'm a peasant and I understand all too clearly that these will not help with my social status. I think these are aimed at a special group of people not yet fully integrated into a decent taxonomy. But they buy commemorative plates and subscribe to 'the peoples friend'.
