I thought your Post number continually moved up. So it might appear as one number, but then moves up as you post on other threads.
Are you on about something different?

Firstly, until I read this I did not know that it was possible to isolate the reference number of individual posts. I am now interested to know:
How do I do that?
what practical uses can I put it to in future posts?
anything else that Jdaw1 could tell us about this subject that would be useful

PS: Hopefully this thread can be re-used for all future educational topics that have nothing to do with port.
If you pass your mouse over the quote button, you'll get the number for your post in the status bar of your browser.
So... if you want to take the link you'll have to know the number of your tread that is in the URL of your address bar and the number from the quote button.
t is for the tread and p for the post. The combinaison should bring you to the right place. It is the same technique used when you receive email about replies on the forum.
When I pass my mouse over the quote box, it just says 'Reply with Quote'.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong. And to be fair, its not very important to me, I was just curious.
Alan, you are looking in the wrong place. Position your cursor over the button and then look in the bottom left corner of the window. There should be a URL displayed there which is the link to the item you are pointing at. It changes as you move the cursor around the screen.

No. You will be educated whether you like it or not.
Click on the "View" menu option at the top of your browser then click on "Status Bar". You should now have a status bar displayed along the bottom of the Internet explorer window.
Report back with results please.

When trying to create a link to a specific post rather than a thread what syntax is used to ensure the target post is displayed rather than the top of the thread?

where the numbers at the end represent the post id. If you hover over the quote button you can see the post id in the bottom left corner of the window.
This requires an update to phpBB, which I've downloaded and now need to get Treacle to implement. In return I have a lot of SQL to write for one of her sites.
One could load it with either of: viewtopic.php?p=6702 viewtopic.php?t=758
but that starts at the top of the page. Suffixing either of these with “#6702† should cause the browser to automagically start the scroll position at this post.
I call the first of these the post number, the second the thread number.
Or, alternatively, offer to use your new found powers for the good of all and offer those plebs without these giddy powers that you will forward on their behalf Private Messages which they wish to distribute to more than one recipient.
