That said, I am quite certain that American attempts to label the U.K. would be far, far more rubbish.

Furthermore, I suspect that some of these are more accurate than American attempts to label the U.S. would be...

You see I thought some of them had done OK. And presumably the advice to those driving through the middle would still be keep the windows wound up and don't stop 'til you reach the sea?

Anyway glad to see us Brits are as capable of being dumb as the rest of the world.

Amusingly, my world is intermixed on several of those maps.

While Washington is normally correctly labeled, it is on one map referred to as Nebraska.

On another, the state labeled Nebraska is in fact Missouri, which is where my parents live now.

And on yet another, the state labeled Nebraska is actually Colorado, which is where one of my brothers lives now.

And one of the Nebraskas is actually Wyoming, which is where my college roommate was from.

But I think we have to give credit for one of the incorrect answers, as "Farmland" is actually very accurate for Nebraska.

Challenge for Glenn: fill in the counties of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales on a blank map.

Anyone got a blank map with county boundaries on it?

No need:

Besides, we have counties too. IIRC there are 93 in Nebraska alone. Care to take a stab at that?

A more appropriate equivalent would be for me to fill in the countries of the E.U., or Canadian provinces. I could probably get reasonably close on either, though I would no doubt make an error or two.

For bonus points, there is a significant error on the map used in that article that is completely unrelated to the humorous labeling. Can anyone identify the error?

The only thing I notice is the inaccurately drawn Four Corners - but that is rather minor.

Really, some of them are pretty good, and better than the typcial high school - or college grad - in the US would do.

Then again, a signifcant minority of Americans think that the world is only 4,000 years old, and that Darwin is a tool of Satan - at least you guys have the decency to put him on your £10 note.

Most Americans would have trouble naming all of the "states" of Canada.

That was a particular concern for the rest of the world whilst a member of that minority and his son were Presidents.

We have Satan on our £10 note

I thought that Glenn's second comment was the best - how would these maps look if they had been given to a selection of US citizens?

I love the one where there are skateboarders, trees, and other things drawn on it.

And the one with "Big Scotland (with polar bears")

Seriously, with so many states and some very small and close together, it's not easy to memorize them all unless you've lived in that area.

I saw a funny pic that Ryan Opaz posted on his FB page about the UK/Ireland/Scotland. I learned a couple things from that one. I'd post it, but not sure where he got it from.

I'm pretty good except for the countries on the Eastern side of the Adriatic and some parts of the former USSR. Those have all changed (some more than once) since I learned geography. Czechoslovakia, anyone?
