Rubbish Week for British Sport

by KillerB
As Lewis Hamilton messes up the F1 championship we can now wallow in British ineptitude in the sporting arena. Yes, he was second in his rookie year. Yes, we were second in the Rugby World Cup. We also had both England and Scotland screwing up qualification in the old USSR - bloody commies. Can we just actually win something and not be plucky runners-up? Just once? Please?
Altogether now:
We're crap and we know we are
We're crap and we know we are
Repeat to fade.
1st then 2nd in the rugger isn’t a disgrace.

Losing in Moscow was.

One should never call it 'Rugger'. It is not a disgrace, just something else we lost this week.

I entirely agree with KillerB, it should never be called Rugger.
On the sporting front I am starting to wonder if the presence of a Scotsman in 10 Downing Street is having an adverse effect on our collective sporting capability. The "almost but not quite good enough" displays by the England's rugby, football and cricket teams and little Lewis H are very similar to the plight of Scottish sportsmen over the last 100 years. Welcome to my world
I have a theory on the F1 result which deserves another thread.

Hold on - leave the England cricket team out of this wallow in self-pity. This rubbish team were the winners of a one day series in Sri Lanka for this first time in history. That's an achievement, at least.

I object to the above post on the basis that rounders isn't a real sport

Rounders is a proper sport. It is played in a limited geographical area that includes Englad, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. You should be careful what you knock as it appears to be one of the few sports that Scotland is (almost) as good at playing as England.

When Canada achieves even the runner up in the rugby world cup pool they qualify into, then you can laugh at us.
When Canada competes in a sport against the US other than to allow your American cousins to call themselves world champions of a sport played in only two countries, then you can laugh at us.
When Canada can win more Olympic medals in the summer games (where all the world's nations are represented) than they do in the winter games (which 95% of the world cannot practice or compete in), then you can laugh at us.
When Canada can do more than just watch 32 other countries compete in the World Cup finals, then you can laugh at us.
When Canada beat England at a meaningful cricket match, then you can laugh at us.
In the meantime, you will just have to smirk quietly as we go through our public angst and try to become better people across our united kingdom.
Alex
PS - don't take this seriously. This post is meant as a bit of fun and not as a serious rant.

Alex,
You were a Tad hard. How can you criticise a Nation that gave us that Magnificently Shrill Diva, Celine Dion!

Luc,
Feel free to laugh out loud.
AHB's well intentioned attempt at humour (which is really just a way of allowing himeslf to have a rant and feeling ok about it) is an excellent example of a typically English reaction to sporting failure. It is absolutely hilarious to watch when it happens, especially because they don't actually understand what it is we are laughing at
Here are some reasons why you have no need to feel that you have no right to enjoy another nations sporting failure:
- The English laugh at Curling, so you can laugh at Rugby
- If only 2 countries play any particular sport then the winner is the world champion. Fact.
- England have quite often watched the (football) World Cup on TV
- There has never been a "meaningful cricket match"

If we need any advice on Sporting Failures, you'll be first PORT of call.
There will never be any Sporting Disaster on the scale of Ally McCleods Tartan Army!
The whole Nation rejoiced, and gathered, and sang. They had the lap of honour before they went. Drawn with Peru, Iran and Holland in the first group stages, a Scottish Journalist asked "What do you plan to do after Scotland win the World Cup?" MacLeod replied: "Retain it."
So off they went....and the rest is History.
So go on, what are you laughing at us about???

Alex ,
I thaught you were going to chew my head off !!
But then Derek restored my faith . . . Merci
And so , I stand by my original statement : What a comical situation
Alan ,
I guess , since we québecois haven't had the opportunity to indulge in international failures as often you folks , I find your situation more than amusing . . .

Amazing how driver like Hamilton who seemed so polished and professional like a veteran driver on the first half of the season could do make such rookie errors on the last 2 races?
He is hardly a rookie in the grand sense of motorsport and had kept his cool so up till China.
I have been wondering if his pit lane entrance mishap and steering wheel button issue was staged? Maybe McLaren wanted to give Alonso a better shot at the Drivers' so he would stay (which he should) at McLaren?

Moses,
See
here for my theory on the Hamilton thing.
Alan,
You ask what it is that we laugh at when England suffer one or more sporting disasters. The unfortunate thing for you is that the very thing that we are laughing at is the same thing that would prevent you from comprehending the answer to that question so there is no point in me telling you

Luc - Derek's just sulking, let me give you an illustration of why:
Derek - name the country team for whom top class Scottish cricketers win their international caps.
Luc - keep up the abuse for the gallant English losers, we give ourselves the same abuse so it is nice to hear it with a Quebecois accent and not a Scottish accent for a change.

I shall endeavour to put forward une version Québeçoise . . .
Isn't Baseball derived from rounders ?
