Summary of the Wine Year of 1940
Year of high precipitation during the winter months, which remained until the month of June, causing heavy attacks of mildew, with heavy losses for the production. July, August and September were dry, very hot months, causing several fires in the plantations. This harvest is thus a rarity that has survived not only the adverse weather conditions, but also the period of instability experienced during the Second World War.
About Kopke
With 375 years of history, Kopke proudly bears the title of oldest Port Wine Company, which is a longevity full of wisdom, experience and prestige.
The brand Kopke appears with the German family with the same name, first by the hand of Christiano Kopke and then, generation after generation, building the excellent reputation that continues until today. However, in 1895, the over 250 years of consecutive binding of the Kopke Family to the Company that bore the same name came to an end. It was then owned by the Bohane family, the company began then to be managed in London, and later, in 1953, it was sold to the Barros Family, already connected to the Port Wine export business.
It is finally in June 2006 that the Sogevinus Group purchases CN Kopke & Cª Lda through Barros & Almeida. With 375 years of existence it preserves its values and tradition, following the trends and capitalizing on the opportunities and challenges of the market. It is a brand specialized in Colheita Ports, the best and most genuine category of Port Wines.
Symbol of prestige and distinction, Kopke is now present in over 50 countries, having cornered the market not only with Port Wines, but also with Douro DOC wines.
