Cellar #4

If I've seemed a little distracted of late, there's a reason..
..after a prolonged tussle with a property developer it looks like I've succeeded in procuring another cellar.
Not very big, with low headroom, and stuffed full of barrels and pipes.
The cellar comes complete with a pub on top, which has a big maintenance backlog...
Home to my tankard for nearly 36 years, I'm pleased to announce that I've saved my local - The White Horse, Newport

You bought a pub! Wonderful. When shall we convene there?

If the lawyers can get their arses into gear, I would like to complete when the current lease expires, on April 28th; however Greene King, the current freeholders, do nothing in a hurry..
..party guaranteed, date TBA

Congratulations Tom!
It will be interesting to see what you do with it.
I do though hope it will have the longest port list of any licensed premises in
the UK!!

Yes, agreed. This could make Saffron Walden a wine-tourism destination.

Congratulations, Tom, I wish you every success with this venture.
Warning to others:
Do not drink Guinness in Tom's pub if you have a flight from Stansted to Porto at 06:30 the following morning

Oh, experience, such a fickle teacher. The lesson you
should have learned is that you don't go to bed if you're drinking Guinness in Tom's pub the night before a 6.30 flight to Porto.

Congratulations Tom - I'm very pleased for you, I know how much you'd hoped to do this. Hope everything goes smoothly with the transfer and getting everything running, and look forward to visiting you at *your* local

The lesson is, never schedule a 6:30 flight if you're hanging with drinking buddies the night before.

There is a flat above the bars which is currently inhabited by the pub manager, who is probably staying on.
However, he is contemplating managing two pubs, so might elect to live in the other one.
And yes, there is a local cab driver who is not averse to turning out at an ungodly hour....

It just gets more and more interesting. How much beer and port do we need to drink to keep you afloat?

Make sure that the contract includes the pub’s domain:

Mrs B comments that your hobbies are more expensive than her collecting tea pots.
My comment is to admire the lengths you will go to in order to have an appropriate address for the registered office for the Port Society! But congratulations, that is quite a feat to achieve.

Tom, congrats and I see you have the freehold, which is good in my book as I'm no particular fan of Greene King. What is equally as impressive is that this is cellar no. 4-oh to have more than a pantry in which to store my Port!

The White Horse Inn, Belmont Hill, Newport, Saffron Walden?
We're busily planning the places we want to visit while in England prior to the Port Harvest Tour, and a visit to Tom's pub seems mandatory.

After a very tortuous and stressful process, punctuated by outrageous behaviour by Greene King plc (whom I will never again patronise) - and a legal bill that I am dreading - I am pleased to announce that contracts were exchanged yesterday afternoon, with completion scheduled for the 26th.
At last, we are in business...

I might be able to make it.
One day there will be placemats. Placemats have links embedded. So I’ve constructed the links:
maps.google.co.uk;
streetmap.co.uk; and
bing.com.

Aha, so not:

Looks like my Google sleuthing had me about 5 buildings down the street from the actual White Horse Inn.
We're still figuring out final details of what we plan to visit while in London this fall. Even though Tom won't be there at the time, we're trying to figure out if we have a day/afternoon to visit Tom's new cellar covering.

I don’t understand your post. If any of the three links I posted are wrong — which might well be true — then please say so clearly. And, ideally, post the correct link.
(I know that the
streetmap.co.uk and
bing.com links have the arrow a few buildings too far north, but I have failed to fix that by tinkering with the ʜᴛᴍʟ parameters. Help!)

jdaw1 wrote:If any of the three links I posted are wrong
They are not. I had previously asked if "The White Horse Inn, Belmont Hill, Newport, Saffron Walden?" was Tom's new pub and received no response. If you google using my question phrase, it points you to a building ~5 down from the links that you provided, but said building is unlabeled in any way that might confirm that it is in fact the White Horse.
Your links, of course, point to a building that actually says "White Horse" on it, which I had previously not noticed when searching. I assume your links are correct and that Google is simply pointing to the wrong building. Or possibly a related "Inn" to Tom's "Pub"?

Question relevant for tourists:
Is the White Horse open on Sundays for lunch and/or dinner? It is looking like Sunday, 21 Sept is the most likely day that we'll be able to make an excursion to Saffron Waldon, if at all.

Asking if a British pub is open for lunch or dinner is like asking if the Pope is a Catholic.
Assuming of course that the White Horse serves food.

Well yes, but is the Pope a Catholic on Sunday? SCP-DFS's research says that the Pope isn't Catholic on Mondays.

I seem to have collected a double magnum of SV00. It fell into the car from my father’s cellar. What should I do with it?
