1. Carefully check the train times the night before your homeward flight departs.
2. Arrive in good time, grumble about delays, but generally manage to get to Luton fairly quickly.
3. Look at the departure board and realise your flight does not depart from Luton.
4. Swear (repeat this step several times).
5. Try to amend your booking for a later flight, using the smartphone app: no dice, the departure time is less than 2 hours away and after this point flights cannot be amended.
6. See 4.
7. Check subsequent flight times from Luton and Gatwick.
8. Buy a train ticket to Gatwick - quickly, the bus is leaving for the train station.
9. Open your smartphone app and book a whole new flight from Gatwick.
10. Look at the booking you've just made as the bus pulls away.
11. Realise you've just bought a ticket from Stansted.
12. See 4.
13. Amend your booking to depart from Gatwick.
14. Arrive at Gatwick and read the departure board: flight EZY835 at 1350 is delayed until 1610.
15. See 4.
16. Time for a drink, don't you think? Between train tickets, flight tickets and alterations, you're £200 lighter. Beats dieting.

I am no longer allowed to book flights on phones.

I am no longer allowed to take flights without reading where they're departing from and going to.

This can be made easy by not flying with Easyjet any more. British Airways only fly to Belfast from one airport.

Lesson learned. Second glass on the way.

Wow, reminds me of the time I reserved a flight home for thanksgiving, only to realize the day of supposed departure that I'd booked one for December.

Exactly. This is why I need a PA.

But at least then it's their fault  (Mordant sense of humour returning after ⅔ of a bottle of wine.)

Don’t drink so much that you miss your flight.

I am at the gate. I seem somehow to have acquired your BFT catalogue. If you want it I will send it.

So it was left at the RAF Club, not on the bus? Hurray! Yes please: do keep or send.

I once booked a flight from Sydney to Perth, Australia. Didn't realise that the website I thought I scored a cheap deal on had the American form of date i.e. month first, as opposed to the British standard of day then month. My wife was not amused when we tried to check in

Here's a salutary tale.

EDIT:
The BBC, in the above article, wrote:the unerring homing instinct of a drunk.
This somehow failed me, but forces me to ask whether my body and brain were simply trying to keep me in London.

One could call the £200 a kind of "apprentice's due" for the lesson you have learned now.

For what terrible sin were you being sent to Perth?
