Lovely pale straw colour, very faint petrol nose, then in the mouth a fabulously dry entry, heavily slaty, deliciously sour acids, with an umami note there too. The finish dries the gums and leaves lychee and bitter lemon lingering on the tongue. I like this.

Are you sure this 2012 Riesling had (even faint) petrol notes? (It's hardly a year in the bottle). Sometimes apricot notes in young wines are mistaken for petrol.

I will have to confirm when I drink it again on Tuesday (I will once again be drinking a bottle of wine in the name of art.)

In the name of science I will buy a bottle of this on Wednesday and report back on this one (as a kind of control).

Regarding the concurring TN: Amazing, but if such a young wine already shows petrol notes (which means that it ages faster than expected/normal), then the overall quality of the wine might not be so good. Which does not mean that it is not a delight when enjoyed young.

It is very possibly the case that I am wrong!

I think in the name of testing whether I am correctly identifying 'petrol' notes, I should open a bottle of old Riesling tonight. Perhaps a 1998 Dr. Burklin-Wolf P.C. Wachenheimer Rechbächel?

This would be a good idea. But you should take your time. Don't rush it with this old bottle.

I recommend that you also have a glass of petrol to compare with the Riesling. Please (a) label the glass of petrol clearly and (b) don't smoke while drinking the Riesling as we would not like you to have an accident and so risk writing an incorrect tasting note.

Perhaps also a glass of apricot juice would be another useful comparator.

I had another bottle of this to myself as I gave a performance-lecture at the Ulster Museum today. Very good stuff, and yes, it really does have a petrolish hint. I loved every glug.
