2012 Kloster Eberbach Steinberger "Crescentia" Riesling trocken

This tasting note is dedicated to an esteemed member of this forum, who likes a sparkling wine that is made of grapes grown in this vineyard.

Eberbach Abbey is a former monastery near Eltville in the Rheingau, which was founded by Cistercians in the early 12th century. The interior scenes of the film “The name of the Rose” where shot there. The winery today belongs to the state of Hesse and is Germany’s biggest winery with almost 200 hectares of vineyards. Eberbach Abbey’s best vineyard is the Steinberg, in which wine is grown since 1170. The 34 hectare big vineyard was completely surrounded by a 2,6 km long wall in the 18th century. So the Steinberg is the German equivalent of the Clos de Vougeot, which the exception that the Steinberg belongs exclusively to the Eberbach Abbey. Steinberg means “Stone hill” which refers to the stony soil and not the wall (which was built centuries after the vineyard was established.) Crescentia is an internal quality sign and is used since the 15th century for wines from the Abbey’s best vineyards.

After all this introductory talk, here’s the TN:
Pale yellow colour, smells very mineral and of apricot and peach, quite full-bodied, dry, but not in a tart way, nice, crisp acidity, peach in the mouth and in the aftertaste, medium-length finish, a really good Riesling
