We don't seem to have many tastings in the calendar for early 2017, so I thought I'd test the appetite for getting the '80s Majors Matrix in the diary.

Anyone up for this on Thursday 9 March, at the Boot & Flogger? If you like the idea but not the date then please mention this.

Ian, Simon, Simon, Charles, Dave - many thanks for confirming. The planned 15 ports currently split between 7 of us assuming Julian confirms. Ideally we should get to 10 attendees as a minimum to avoid a challenging port per person ratio. Let's see who else is interested in the next couple of weeks.

Charles - could you flag which ports you have available.

I have F85, T85, G85, W80 and D80 - I've been put down as having W85 and D85 which I haven't (well, I have the D85 but it is rubbish and wouldn't dream of bringing it) instead of G85 and T85. :?

OK in the top post I have provisionally allocated bottles for folks to bring (bold and italics initials). Some people have multiple bottles available - please drop me a PM if there are any issues with the bottles I've allocated to you, or if you can't spare multiple bottles. Given the uneven balance of provision, we'll balance the costs for this tasting. I've had a quick squint at the prices I have paid for various 80/83/85, which range from £31 to £42, so I propose that we just have a flat price of £38 per bottle for contributions made. Again please drop me a PM if this leaves anyone high and dry on costs!

I note Tom has not yet responded to the thread. It is entirely possible that he won't be back in the UK by then. However, if he is he might have a bottle of Fonseca 1980 available.

Thanks Alex. Ian has a plan afoot which might solve the gap. If that fails then we might need to call on Tom if he's around by then.

We have several weeks until this tasting - could I ask those bringing bottles to try and get them to the B&F some time in advance. Not the end of the world if you can't, but always helps improve the prospects of a better showing if they can rest a while.

In the first post are pictures of the current draft of the placemats.

This first draft has three pages, each of one vintage. An alternative would be 2½ A4 pages, each column being one shipper, so saving some table space. Or 15 could be squeezed on one A3, shrinking the radius to 118.978pt (from the six-on-A4 of 131.315pt). Preferences?

Edit: upon reflection, I think I prefer 2½ A4 pages, each two columns of three, one column per shipper, and so (seen as a whole) one row per vintage. Failing cogent disagreement, I’ll do that.

I also marginally prefer the proposed arrangement of a column per shipper. Makes it easier to compare a shipper across vintages, as well as comparing shippers within a vintage.

I see that Tony has lots of availability, some of which duplicate bottles that are being brought by people contributing two.

Is there a solution where Tony supplies a different bottle and I bring my F85?

Phil, this is no problem.

As Mike alluded to in earlier post, I have managed to secure a bottle of F80 from an unopened and well stored case. Will hopefully then bring the T80, F83 and T80 with me on Weds.
