Kerb appeal; recycling.

I haven't put the recycling out for a few weeks so on putting it out tonight I felt quite pleased with the empties left at the kerbside. To whit; several bottles of vintage champagne, a couple of vintage ports, a couple of LBVs, three halves of 'As you like it' amontillado, two 15yo H&H Verdelho, a couple of old claret bottles, a magnum, burgundy, Rhone and Chianti were all represented.

Touring the village for the evening constitutional I noticed no real competition, except the chap up the road who for sheer consumption outdoes me every time with a box filled with identical rather generic looking Scotch bottles. Still his is not a competition I would wish to win, but I thought I should mention this in the cause of balance.

I have on occasion looked into a recycling bin if I see an interesting bottle.

Our recycling bin is a full-size wheelie bin, collected bi-weekly.

I find that if you hold the bottles up as high as you can before dropping them in you end up with a bin that is only partially filled with broken glass rather than one that is brimming over with intact goodies for the nosey neighbours to browse through.

The standard of my recycling has definitely improved in recent months. Gone are the days of it being filled mostly with air surrounded by un-crushed Stella cans and now it is just a pile of broken glass that used to be Claret bottles, with the occasional single malt thrown in for good measure.

A nosey neighbour? Moi? I am just a bit obsessive when I see a port bottle. Stella is responsible in part for me and Emma so I have a good feeling about it. But it does give me the most ferocious hangover.

I am currently in Germany. There are about fifteen different bins to put your rubbish in, coloured glass, plain glass, glass bottles that you get a deposit on, PET, non-recyclable plastic, paper, card, food waste.. Have I missed something? When we empty the food waste into a bin we have to put charcoal on top of it (that's not the municipal regulations, just the place I'm staying, which makes their own compost). I simply cannot be bothered to go hoking1 around in their bins...

1Hoking - authentic Norn Irish word for 'rummaging'.

The coloured glass is also divided in green glass and brown glass. I'm always at a loss to decide if the bottle is made of green or brown glass. So I dump it where I think it fits.
A place in Berlin which makes their own compost. Are you staying in Prenzlauer Berg?

Moabit. It's the next Prenzlauer Berg.

I just wish to point out that I am not acting like some parkie or party minesweeper searching the bins of Somerset in a bid for a splash of somebody else's alcohol. I just happen to have seen the odd vintage port bottle and have speculated what it might be. Hoking, tchah! (As an alternative to forsooth).

Don't mess about with German recycling, you will be fined and looked at funny, so I hear.

Re forsooth: see my other post.
Fined: More like totally ostracised. I lift the lid of the compost bin and a swarm of fruit-flies explode upward and outward like a giant puffball disgorging all its spores at once. There must be a better way.

I know how that feels. People look at you as if you were solely responsible for global warming, climate change and sea level rise just because you drop your rubbish in the wrong bin. I guess we Germans are grimly determined at everything we do. :)

Calm down. We know that you're just concerned that your neighbours drink decent port. :)

I just had this sense others may be getting of a raddled hick being chased away from bins.

Another thought: If there are like-minded port drinkers in the neighbourhood you could set up the Somerset branch of TPF.

That's bound to be a good idea. God, can you imagine the laundry on all those port-stained smocks...

Perhaps they should only drink white port.

Yes, the joke is on me tonight, I was away seeing how many of Daniels words were made up. The answer is; 'quite a few'.

Wainscoting is not made up. We will be having some of ours redone in a few weeks as we remodel.

yeah but Reheboth? I am not sure place names should come under the act. If so Nempnett Thrubwell demands a mention.

Surely climate change is solely responsible for global warming? or is it the other way around?

Whichever, it's nothing to do with wheelie bins and everything to do with astrophysics. The process is quite simple: orbit, orbit, orbit, wobble, wobble, wobble, change change change.

It really is that simple.

Reheboth is a Biblical place and has a certain resonance about it. Nempnett Thrubwell is not, even though it must be admitted that it too has a certain resonance about it, but of quite a different kind. Men in port-stained smocks, that's Nempnett Thrubwell.
