Figueira Finest Ruby Port
18% alcohol
Bottled April 2005
Manufacturer’s recommeded price: 295 Rp (approx. £3) inc. taxes
Produce of Goa.

Poured from a bottle made of pale green glass. Closed with a screw cap that wasn’t a Stelvin but a simple screw cap. Tasting note taken over the course of 2-3 hours.

Stinky nose, smelling as though cooked and stewed; a bit medicinal.

Bitter impact in the mouth, some fruit in the mid-palate but alcohol not well integrated. Fruit is stewed and mushy, acid is bitter and burning, tannins grippy but reasonably balanced, some rancid tones.

Aftertaste is unpleasant, an alcohol burn and then bitter and mouldy oranges.

Very unpleasant, avoid if ever offered a chance to drink this. 0/0 or 60/100 â€‟ but could be a bottle that had just been stored badly…

If this was a typical bottle - then most certainly it was the worst example of "port" that I have encountered this year and only marginally better than the Tanzanian Red Port that is still a scar on my memory.

However, I think this bottle had been stewed in an un air-conditioned storage room in Calcutta for 2 years and may have been affected by the storage conditions.

The worst 'port' I ever drank was Indian. IIRC it was called 'Porto No13', bottled in a soft plastic bottle with screwcap. It also had that stewed, burning quality that was so prominent in your bottle. I think we may just have discovered how to determine Indian Port.

I have a surprise bottle to bring to a certain offline under the theme of "The Unknown Shipper and His Unusual Friends"

I shall wait for others to comment before I try it again!
